On Monday, the much-anticipated Steve Jobs biography, the simply titled Steve Jobs, hit the bookshelves. As was expected, it’s been a hit so far and has rocketed up to the top spot on Amazon’s bestseller list. The interview with author Walter Isaacson that aired on 60 Minutes Sunday night grabbed impressive ratings, and the video of that interview was one of the most sought-after items on the web yesterday.

The point of all that is to say that people are incredibly interested in an in-depth, candid look at a man that led a life of relative privacy. And if you go by the early reviews (most of which are quite good), it looks like Isaacson delivers on that promise.

The fascination that people have with Steve Jobs since his death has not been lost on Sony Pictures, who have made a play for the rights to the book.

And according to the LA Times, Sony really wants Aaron Sorkin to pen the screenplay.

They say Sorkin is being courted by Sony to throw his pen behind the upcoming biopic, a move that is exciting if not completely unsurprising. Sorkin is one of Hollywood’s best writers, as is evidenced by his work on The West Wing, Sports Night, The American President and the recent Moneyball. And of course, he has a history writing movies about the tech world.

His Oscar-winning script for 2010′s The Social Network tackled Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, another highly complex giant of the industry.

But he did know Steve Jobs, which always complicates matters. And it’s entirely possible that he won’t want to dive into another Silicon Valley project. But considering the success of The Social Network, one can’t help wondering what Sorkin could do with the Steve Jobs character.

For a look at some of his best work, here’s a well-written scene from the all around well-written The Social Network:

What do you think? Would Sorkin be a good fit for the Steve Jobs biopic? Let us know in the comments.

Last month, The Social Network won 4 Golden Globes for Best Director, Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Picture, Drama. It had been nominated for 6. Jesse Eisenberg, the actor who portrayed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, was nominated for the Best Actor, Drama award, but lost out to Colin Firth for his performance in the film, The King’s Speech. Andrew Garfield, who played Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but lost to Christian Bale for his performance in The Fighter.

Comedy Central was all about The Social Netork last night. The Daily Show had Justin Timberlake, who portrays Sean Parker in the film, and The Colbert Report had Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter.

Timberlake says he’s "ridiculously stupid with computers". He calls Zuckerberg a "brilliant mind".

Colbert asks Sorkin fiction or fact? Sorkin responds, "Fiction…I’m sorry, fact…it’s absolute non-fiction."

He goes on to say he wants to "start fights in the parking lot" about which characters are right and wrong. He also says viewers will enjoy the movie whether they love or hate Facebook.

He also has a bit of interesting commentary about social networking in general. "I do think that socializing on the Internet is to socializing what reality TV is to reality."

Colbert’s response: "Well, we’re not going to get any deeper than that."

Here’s Timberlake on The Daily Show:

UPDATE: CNET has received some casting and possible plot details from someone in the industry…

"…early casting searches are under way and that the list of young actors being eyeballed to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg includes both Michael Cera ("Superbad," "Arrested Development") and Shia LaBeouf ("Transformers"). They aren’t the only ones, and it’s not clear whether either of those two in-demand actors would want to take a turn away from comedies (Cera) or action movies (LaBeouf) to play Zuckerberg.

Cera is, according to the source, a top choice because audiences find him particularly likable. Rumors about the plot of the book "Accidental Billionaires" hint that Zuckerberg is going to be portrayed rather unfavorably–basically, as an obnoxious nerd–and obnoxious nerds are not the world’s biggest box-office sell. Cera could make the part a little bit more sympathetic."

I could see Michael Cera playing Zuckerberg, but if he’s cast, seems like it should be a comedy… and I don’t see Fincher directing a silly comedy.

As far as Shia LaBeouf goes, of course he’s being considered for the role. Is there a movie made today that he’s not in or rumored to be starring?

Original Article: With a global userbase of just over 200 million, there is no denying that Facebook is extremely popular. But, will the social sites popularity turn into ticket sales when the movie comes out?

Facebook: The Movie, which is tentatively being called "The Social Network", is currently in the works.

The movie will be an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s upcoming book "The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal". (You might recognize Mezrich’s name from his other book "Bringing Down the House" which was adapted for the screen with the title "21"). The Accidental Billionaires hits store shelves on July 14th.

Kevin Spacey, a producer for the film, wrote a review of the book for Amazon. Below is a section from it…

"Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg were two geeky, socially awkward Harvard undergrads who wanted nothing more than to be cool. While Eduardo chose the more straightforward path of trying to gain acceptance into one of the school’s ultra-posh, semi-secret Final Clubs, Mark used his computer skills by hacking into Harvard’s computers, pulling up all the pictures of every girl on campus to create a sort of "hot-or-not" site exclusive to Harvard. Though the prank nearly got Mark kicked out of college, he and Eduardo realized that they were on to something big. Thus, the initial concept of Facebook was born; what happened next, however, was right out of a Hollywood thriller."

Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the film, plans to start production later this year and is currently in "advanced talks" with David Fincher to direct. (Yes, THAT David Fincher)

For those of you not familiar with David Fincher’s resume (shame on you) he’s directed Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac and most recently The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

If Columbia is able to land Fincher, it will give the project instant credibility, more so than say if Brett Ratner was attached. Some moviegoers will see the film just based on Fincher directing it.

Am I alone in thinking that this project doesn’t really suit Fincher’s style? Tell us.

Ben Mezrich, best selling author of "Bringing Down the House" about a group of MIT students burning Las Vegas casinos by developing a system to win at blackjack, says his next book will be about Facebook.

"My next book is about the kids who founded Facebook," Mezrich told the Boston Herald. The book is scheduled to be released in fall of 2009 by Doubleday. Mezrich also confirmed that prominent screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has signed on to make the book into a movie.

Mezrich says the book will focus on entrepreneurship at Harvard and on Mark Zuckerberg who has yet to speak with the author.

The book will also be about Harvard’s Final Clubs, which are like secret societies, or elite clubs at other Ivy League schools.

In May, Gawker reported that Mezrich had signed a million dollar book deal for his story of Zuckerberg and the other Facebook founders. According to the report the book focuses on Zuckerberg and his roommate Eduardo Saverin, developing a program called FaceSmash to rate Harvard women based on their looks.

Mezrich says what was reported by Gakwer was not all true. "That’s not what the book is about. What is Gawker even doing writing something about me?"

The Facebook story will be Mezrich 11th book.

Aaron Sorkin is a television and film writer/producer. He also acts (roles include: Man in Bar, Man at Bar, Aide in Bar, and Man in Crowd). You’re probably more familiar with his writer/producer status. He worked on The West Wing, Sports Night, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He also wrote Charlie Wilson’s War and A Few Good Men.

Aaron Sorkin

Now Sorkin is looking to tackle the social networking universe. Well, Facebook at least. Sony Pictures along with producer Scott Rudin has tapped him to do so. His first course of action was to figure out what Facebook actually is. Sounds like the perfect guy for the job.

He has just started a Facebook Group about the potential movie. On it he says, "I honestly don’t know how this works, which is why I’m here. If anyone has any questions I’d be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments I’m glad to listen. And if anyone has any Facebook stories I think they might be helpful."

Oh well, the movie’s probably going to have to include a fair bit of fiction to be truly entertaining. Although, this is not the first time the concept has appealed to hollywood executives.

Apparently a lot of people think Facebook’s story is interesting enough to make a movie about. A spokeswoman for Facebook told the LA Times, "We are routinely approached by writers and filmmakers interested in telling the Facebook story or the stories of the more than 100 million people who use Facebook to share and make the world more open and connected. At this point, we have not agreed to cooperate with any film project, but we are flattered by the interest."

So they’re looking to make a movie about Facebook with a writer that’s never used it, and Facebook hasn’t agreed to allow it. There’s no telling when, and even IF this movie will be made. Still, fans remain optimistic. "Most people probably expected a Facebook movie to be a throwaway teeny bopper sex romp but with Sorkin behind it, this thing could actually be good. Wow, that’s a little scary," writes JoBlo.com.

If it doesn’t work out for Sorkin to make the movie, maybe they can go the "vs." route with MySpace. I can’t imagine it being any worse than "Alien vs. Predator", and that did well enough for them to make a sequel.
