Taco Bell Accidentally Gives Customers Bag of Money
A carload of friends in Holland, Michingan drove through Taco Bell on Saturday night and ordered chicken burritos, two soft-shell tacos with no cheese, and some drinks. They paid for their food, took their bags, and drove off. But, in a twist that Joe Pesci would have loved to witness, they soon realized they had been given the wrong order at the drive-thru. Instead of the food they were expecting, they found $3,600 in cash.
The three friends – Kennidi Rue, her boyfriend Grant Kruse, and third wheel Luke Postma – thought they must be dupes on a reality TV show.
“I thought it was a candid camera joke,” Rue told ABC News. “I was about to hand my boyfriend his food and I said, ‘You guys, there’s no food in here. It’s just money.’”
The friends had made it a mile down the road from the restaurant when they discovered the error. No one was around. Maybe no one would ever be able to determine that they had this money. What to do?
Apparently the friends wanted the burritos real bad.
“We just sat there and said, ‘What are we supposed to do?’” said Rue. “At first, we were like, ‘Think about what we can do with this money,’ but we weren’t raised like that. We realized we should give it back.”
The threesome called the local police, who then escorted them back to the Taco Bell. They stepped inside and asked to speak to a manager. They then handed over the money.
“The manager started bawling and was really shaken up and said, ‘Thank you so much,’” Rue said. “Right there, we thought, ‘Wow, we’re so glad we did the right thing. It was obviously a big deal for her.”
But there was no fanfare for the friends. The manager retreated to the back office with the bag of money. Rue and her friends were told that the store employees commonly placed register money in to-go bags. This had been a simple mix-up.
“They fixed our order and gave it to us, and that was that.”
