Shailene Woodley Angers Twihard Fans with Anti-‘Twilight’ CommentsBy: Jerrica Tisdale - March 13, 2014
This year Woodley will appear in two major films based on young adult novels. The first film is the much anticipated adaptation of John Green’s bestselling book The Fault In Our Stars. The other major movie is Divergent based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling trilogy.
Woodley wasn’t that excited about the prospect of appearing in a franchise series. She even consulted major movie star, Oscar winner, and current franchise queen Jennifer Lawrence about doing the Divergent movies. Lawrence encouraged her to take on the lead role in these films.
Clearly Woodley is on her way towards mega-stardom, but she may have made a major PR blunder by being so vocal with her opinions. Woodley told Teen Vogue that she didn’t approve of Bella and Edward’s relationship in Twilight.
She said, “Twilight,’ I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”
Though many may agree with Woodley’s assessment of the couple, none of them are starring in a film that Twilight fans are likely to go see. After Woodley’s statement, many Twilight fans (Twihards) took to various platforms, including Twitter, to voice their rage against Woodley’s opinion.
One infamous Twihard fan Emma Clark took to Youtube to express her dissatisfaction with Woodley’s comments.
Besides voicing her opinions against Twilight, Woodley has been vocal about a marketing decision for The Fault In Our Stars. Woodley speaking against certain franchises will either win her major points from her present and future fans, or alienate her against people who might rush to the seats of her movies.
