The second session from the Search Marketing Expo in Seattle was focused on the issue of duplicate content.

Eytan Seidman, Lead Program Manager, Live Search, Microsoft said you should be concerned with duplicate content on your site because it fragments your pages in some way. In order to avoid duplicate content, he said to keep session parameters simple.

For local sites he recommended having unique content on them and if you don’t have different content, you most likely don’t need multiple pages.

To avoid people copying your content, he said to tell people that are going to use your content to attribute.

Peter Linsley, Senior Product Manager for Search,  at Ask.com gave a standard definition of duplicate content saying it was the same content on multiple urls. The reason it is bad for search engines is because users do not want to see the same content result.

As for avoiding duplicate content you should use copyright or creative commons notice. Also make the content unique and difficult to be taken out of context.

Amit Kumar, Senior Engineering Manager, Yahoo Search, said that Yahoo tries to crawl links from duplicate, less; so fewer visits from the crawler could mean that the content may be considered duplicated.

He added if you get content from somewhere else you should attribute.

Vanessa Fox, Google, Product Manager weighed in on duplicate content saying they want to show unique information so they want to avoid duplicated information.

If you have pages that are fairly similar, you may want to consider combining the two. In some cases, pages that are similar just need to be distinguished from one another a bit more.

On client site redirects, she said a 301 is considered a client side redirect because the client is actually taken from one page to another and the crawler can see the message.

On search engines reaching out to Word Press and blog software types to avoid duplicate content, she said there is a lot they can do as far as working with the CMS software people to come up with better solutions so end users won’t have to worry about duplicate content.

So what about copying your blog out to the major blog sites. Is that bad news as well?

Google needs a method of cleaning duplicate content completely out of the search engine when they are notified of it. They can’t penalize the site that IS NOT duplicating content when they’re the ones leaving the duplicaters’ caches in Google. Somebody will manage to get a lawyer to sue them for copyright infringement in the cache. They should be held accountable when they penalize people’s web sites when they’re the ones at fault. I lost months of income and just finally got them to remove the last two pages, yes TWO, and lift my penalty. What they did to me is not right.

I have a state A page and a state B page. I want both to see a link, the same link. Are you saying create One page with a link on it, and have both states refer to that link.

I understand the concepts of timming duplicate content, but I see an issue which I’ve not heard mentioned at all.

Sites which run stores for certain types of products (ie: same product with different categories) have a real issue.

Example: I run a website which sells design templates. Thousands of templates which are identical but for the category they are under. So I need a new page for each category of template, BUT the content of each page is basically identical (as the templates themselves are brought in with a few lines of code)… So the basic template of that page (and every other product page) is identical except for the title and category heading.

What can one do about this?

With the idea that you’ll get dinged for duplicate content, does this open the door for a competitor to create a site that copies your site simply for the sake of knocking you off the rankings?

What does it mean when the article talks about:
“Amit Kumar, Senior Engineering Manager, Yahoo Search, said that Yahoo tries to crawl links from duplicate, less; so fewer visits from the crawler could mean that the content may be considered duplicated. He added if you get content from somewhere else you should attribute.”

I m wondering about how this attribute tag or whatever it means by attribute content works?

How do you go abouts to attribute content?

I know that Google, and many others, think that Google is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but my experience with both Google and Yahoo “searchers” is that they do not tend to be my buyers as compared to MSN for example. So I am worrying less and less about what Google wants.

Having said all that, is it duplicate content for a business to have a similar or even identical content web site when they conduct the same business in more than one location…for example Dallas and Fort Worth. Where one url / web site could be dallashomes.com and the other fortworthhomes.com, as examples, but have the same content on both of them. Where will the line be drawn over “penalties” for people trying to conduct business in multiple markets?

How on earth is a 301 a client side redirect?

What then is a server side redirect?

  • Ed Young

I wish I know what you meant in this context “attribute”. (Duplicate content). I find site who has taken my content all the time. Without turning it into a full time job, seems there’s little I can do about it. Search engines suck, especially yahoo.

  • Peter Morffew

The experts are not very forth coming with their description of duplicate content.
Web Designers are advised to maintain continuity with their web pages so that surfers know they are on the same website and have not strayed

Obviously the search engine people such as Yahoo, Google, Ask, etc have a problem with duplicated content.
The search companys should post advice on their home pages on how to avoid this and describe the problems it can cause them and the website designers. This way it can be avoided.

By just raising the issue at a conference the problem can only be tackled piece meal.
