In a clever holiday marketing ploy, Coca-Cola and YouTube have collaborated to bring joy to the world with their online video cards.

Sure paper Christmas cards look nice sitting on a mantle, but what else do they do? While they are thoughtful, they cannot actually convey emotion the way that spoken words can. What better way to say Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, or Kwanzaa than with a customized holiday video card from Coke and YouTube?

Coca-Cola is synonymous with holiday advertising campaigns, and has been since it started it’s Christmas campaign 75 years ago. The soda company’s Rockwell-esque Santa Claus cases and lovable polar bear commercials bring back a sense of whimsy and wonder to the holiday season.

While YouTube is not yet a staple of the holiday season, they soon hope to be with their innovative partnership with Coke. The media giant and the world’s best-known company partnered to create a holiday online message feature called the “Holiday Wishcast”.

Holiday Wishcast is currently available at YouTube.com, and users have until the first week of January to create a custom message for loved ones, or to send a classic Coca-Cola holiday ad. Wishcast also features pre-made video content from YouTube “celebrities” including TerraNaomi, LisaNova, and TheWineKone.

Coca-Cola and YouTube are benefiting in ways other than spreading holiday cheer, they are both receiving traffic and increasing their marketing. The Wishcast video cards are blanketed by Coca-Cola brand insignia, along with the aforementioned lovable polar bear at the bottom of the screen.

YouTube reaches over 50 million viewers with the online video site, and Coca-Cola is expanding it’s reach to the online market with the partnership.

“We are in the game to reinvent consumer connections, and so we’re very serious about the new marketing model,” said Tim Kopp, vice president of worldwide interactive marketing at Coke.

Not only is the collaboration beneficial to Coke but YouTube, Time Magazine’s Invention of the Year, is in business with one of the most well known and most respected brands in the world, which is certainly good publicity.

Also, online cards are fast becoming the favorable alternative to physical cards because of their eco-friendliness and convenience. The fact that Wishcast messages can be customized to the recipient of the card makes them even more appealing, especially for people who cannot travel home for the holidays.

If you are feeling inspired this holiday season, use your actual words to wish someone a happy holiday in a video card.
