In July, Volition surprised everybody with the announcement that Johnny Gat would be back in Saints Row IV after he presumably died in the previous game. There was no explanation for his return at the time, and you’ll just have to play the game to find out how Gat made it back into the land of the living.

In the meantime, Volition has shared a new dev diary that touches upon the return of Johnny Gat. The team doesn’t explicitly state any reason for his return, but they say that it’s been rewarding to see the fan response. His voice actor, Daniel Dae Kim, teases that there’s a big surprise in store for fans of the Gat.

Besides Johnny Gat, the team also says that they tried to bring together fans of both Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third with the latest title. They even make fun of the arguments that go on between fans of both games by having the Shaundi from both Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third appear in the game.

Saints Row IV launches August 20 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
