Believe it or not, Android may soon become omnipresent.  A new report from Strategy Analytics states that shipments of Android devices will increase by 900 percent this year, which should outpace the growth of all other mobile operating systems by an astounding amount.

Google Android

Now, to be fair to those competitors, Android’s 900 percent increase comes about as a result of its small initial base; something tiny can double or triple in size more easily than something huge.  The iPhone OS is still supposed to experience a 79 percent growth rate of its own, too.

Neil Mawston, the director of wireless device strategies at Strategy Analytics, noted in a statement, however, "Android has fast been winning healthy support among operators, vendors and developers.  A relatively low-cost licensing model, its semi-open-source structure and Google’s support for cloud services have encouraged companies such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung, T Mobile, Vodafone and others to support the Android operating system."

And as a result, he believes, "Android is now in a good position to become a top-tier player in smartphones over the next two to three years."

The Strategy Analytics report may become a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy if developers are motivated by it to participate in the Android Market.

Maybe I haven’t been paying attention. But your article makes no reference, apart from your tags, to what it refers.

    Did you mean http://code.google.com/android/ ??

    Thanks.

    Android. Cute name.

I bet they are going to make it so that all of the Android users’ phones will be forced to participate in Google(r) Cloud Computing.
I’ll be running your spreadsheet application in the background whenever I’m not kickin it with grandma, talking over last year’s reunion events. Might as well not waste energy when I can be clickin’ ads.

geez … I can see it now —
“Don’t resist. It will be cheaper if you let us use your phone for a wee bit of time, and click these few ads. or you can pay a whopping monthly service charge. However, please keep in mind the choice is totally up to you! Please press t he red button now. go ahead, press it….”
