Put Yourself Into Your Google Profile URL

Significant for Google as Social Network

It has been discovered that Google Profiles are now letting users enable the option to create a vanity URL. In other words, if you check a box, your Google profile page will become htp://www.google.com/profiles/whatever-your-gmail-name-is.

Profile URL

MG Siegler at TechCrunch writes: "The problem with Google’s movement towards becoming more of a social entity is that it lacks one cohesive place to tie everything together…but actually it has such an area…" this profile page, which will now become more accessible as a result of the vanity URLs.

This is quite interesting to me considering I was only recently talking about Gmail as Google’s real social network. Still, it will take some kind of extra promotion of the feature to kick these profiles into high use I think. People are not necessarily going to know they have such an option.

Vanity URLs may have some extra search-related incentive, as Siegler points out, saying "it will undoubtedly help them show up more often in actual Google Searches."

To set up your vanity URL, simply go to "My Account" from your Google Homepage, then click "edit profile." From there, you will find the option at the bottom of the page.

  1. It still seems things are too fragmented – maybe the ultimage social place isn’t a place it’s an app that brings all my places together. Like Tweetdeck on steriods..?

I think Google is trying to be your personal storefront. I wrote about that here, http://digg.com/u118gZ

It seems like Google is trying to book a place into social networking world. I wonder what will show up in the near future!

  4. It’s good that Google is making these changes, but they certainly are late adopters which is surprising. The vanity URL’s should come in handy and who knows it may turn into another essential for social media promotion. Perhaps they’ll more tightly integrate things and change the interface to adapt to their new vision.

  5. Any idea why Google says profile names are taken, but when you put the URL in to test them the profile doesn’t actually exist?

  6. Honestly Google I think early on learned from their pagerank toolbar (creation of mania) and they just like to do things to “keep us webmasters interested” – this is just one more post they have achieved in the ever running google buzz generator.

Going to create mine now :-)

Good call Chris. I totally missed this when I signed up for a profile months ago. In fact, I just noticed that the profiles started showing up at the bottom of the results a few days ago. I was pretty proud to see my website and profile come up first out of over 16,000,000 results for my name.

  8. Sounds like its a “beta” (or perhaps more appropriately: alpha) social networking effort. At least it has some possibilities potentially down the road. Wonder what they have cookin’ on this. Look forward to seeing what they end up coming out with :)
