PlayStation Network to be Hacked Again?

Rumors emerge just as PSN set to go back online

PlayStation Network to be Hacked Again?

If these latest rumors have merit, then it really couldn’t get any worse for Sony.

CNET is exclusively reporting that an undisclosed group of hackers are planning another attack on the PSN as early as this weekend.  From CNET:

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony’s Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony’s servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony’s servers.

Now, this would only be the second separate breach of Sony’s servers since the PSN most recently went down on or around April 19th.  Earlier this week, Sony reported that along with information from PSN and Qriociry, hackers had stolen info from its PC gaming division, Sony Online Entertainment.

According to Sony, this was not a separate attack but stemmed from the original event that forced the shut down of the PSN – though it is entirely possible that Sony just said that to avoid more backlash about the security of their network.  Taking them at their word, this second breach could be devastating to Sony and their customers.

Several weeks ago, activist group Anonymous famously took down several Sony sites as retribution for what they saw as unfair litigation against hacker George “geohot” Hotz.  Although Sony implicated Anonymous in the more recent attacks that forced the PSN shutdown, Anonymous has denied all involvement.

On Wednesday, they issued a press release which detailed their defense against the accusations.  They said that the “We are Legion” file Sony apparently found on its servers must have been a plant, put there to unjustly implicate Anonymous.  They said that it is against Anonymous’ goals to mess with credit card numbers:

In the realm of criminal investigation, there is an important aspect of investigations that should never be overlooked.  The “modus operandi” of a criminal rarely changes.  Whoever did perform the credit card theft did so contrary to the “modus operandi” and intention of Anonymous.  Public support is not gained by stealing credit card info and personal identities, we are trying to fight criminal activities by corporations and governments, not steal credit cards.

Whoever perpetrated the attacks look like they might be gearing up for round two, however.  This rumor emerges just as the PSN is planning on getting up and running again.  In a PlayStation blog post, Sony says that service will be restored in the “coming days.”

The newest blog post also gets more specific about the “Welcome Back” package that Sony is preparing as an apology gift to its millions of users.  The package will contain, among other things, WoW Gold Guide, and free month of PSN Plus and some sort of free game.

Sony’s handling of the situation has been an ongoing thread of anger from customers, many feeling like Sony should have been quicker and more forthcoming with all the information they had.  This post addresses that issue:

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

If the new rumors prove to be true, it is surely questionable at best whether Sony can survive another prolonged outage and breach of information.  PS3 owners are already well, frustrated, to say the least.  Hopefully for PS3 gamers, these rumors prove to be untrue and they can get back to gaming in the next few days.

Sony is so arrogant. Their customer service is so poor compaired to their competition. I purchased the PS3 when it first came into the market and it failed within two months. They provided me with a refurbished model which failed a year and a half later. I called customer service and they were unwilling to work with me. They charged me a flat $150 for repairs. The next model failed 14 months later, they wanted to charge me another $150 for another repair. In contrast, I purchased a 50 inch Samsung LCD which failed 2 1/2 years after I purchased it, and despite not having the extended warranty they sent someone out at no charge to repair it for free because they acknowledged that it failed because of a design flaw. I will never purchase a Sony product again because they have shown that they do not stand by their products or with the consumer.

You would have to be the biggest downie, probably on the planet, to try and hack PSN this weekend. Homeland security, FBI, 22 states, and private IT firms all working with Sony to determine those behind the last attack…and you’re going to try and hack it. Good luck in that Federal prison for the next 8-12 months.

Yes Sir! I hope the dumb b4st4rds try. Unlike Sony, the FBI and other government organizations have been known to hire top tier Slicers. Slicers eat hackers.

8-12 months? ah man i’m thinking more like a decade. no way they do less than a year if they’re caught. and if someone tries to hack in for the first time following the PSN reboot – they’re likely to be scapegoated and get all this mess pinned on them even if they aren’t the one responsible.

sony needs SOMEONE to blame after all. jay leno was talking about this PSN debacle … LENO! so you know it just got real! aha!

though … on the string i am, so kudos i guess. and honestly, i hate xbox’s controllers too much to make the switch.

I too am extremly disappointed with the outcome of this entire situation. As a avid Online Player mainly for Sports Games such as Madden Series, an the MLB The Show Series. Its almost like a Let down. Athough practcing vs. the CPU does get kind of old. It makes you realize well I dont know what it makes you realize but it just lets you appreciate things a little more in tune. To those nossile relaxers in the world who have a Soda, Cigy, and a Game going on.. or the alternate Cig whatever you may be. It sad. It ruins our mojo.. I swear when i get back online i’m beating hte first person to a pulp. Heard it here first..Coach-Clark

You people saying that the hackers are not hurting Sony, just hurting the customers, are dead wrong. Sony is losing, and will continue to lose an assload of money from this whole ordeal. Money is king, so I’m sure Sony is hurting in a real bad way.

But yeah, us customers are most definitely getting screwed too.

Sounds like another company that we all know (xbox) is trying to get rid of the competion so they can have a monopoly for on-line gaming with their system. There is no other reason to hack Sony again. If these so called hackers are mad because the person who hacked sony is in trouble, well that is what happens when u break the law. That is one thing that really irritates me is that people who break the law and get caught they think it is unfair for them to be in trouble talk about stupidity. Also lets talk about the hackers. They have no problem hacking someone but when they get hacked boy are they angry. well guess what do onto others as u want them to do to u.

whats going on here?? most of the comments I read are a bid too much.. Don’t read the article, read only the comments and you would think people are talking about the end of the world or something.. its a stupid video game that does not exist in real life.. instead of putting your energy and time in to stupid things, maybe you should become more productive in life, help society with your energy and stop wasting your life on games that will not help feed your kids or family. maybe this is a blessing for all.. maybe you will realize, oh s***, there is a world outside of my bedroom… just maybe you will open your house door and walk down the street and socialize with the world. get a life folks! get a life! a game is a game…

i think its a shame these hackers can’t use their skills for good things like helping authorities by finding terrorist activitie or pedos, it would help make this wacky world safer and not only that they’d get paid legally, but by hacking a company that puts a little bit of fun back in peoples life’s is in my book down right pathetic and very immature, i hope they will be found and delt with harshly and made an example out of, and part of that punishment is to be given a sledge hammer and made to smash all there equipment up and a life times bann on owning any computer equipment. i personally will never cease to be a playstation user as i have only ever had sony consoles and i hate xbox! at least i managed to catch my very first fish (a mackerel lol) while it’s all been down YUMMY :D

A shame? Lmao. Without breaking rules, you are really not a hacker. Definitely not a black-hat for sure. BTW if you are not stupid, making money illegally is way easier and faster then legally. Professional hackers don’t work for some lame company, they don’t like being controlled by other people, they like controlling others. People are certainly going crazy over this no game thing, I think its time for people to grow up and forget about their game addiction. While I agree that using hacking skills to find terrorists would be nice, few hackers would actually do that.

Why is no one pissed that SONY did a crappy job of securing their data?

If you go to a bank and deposit 100 dollars and the next behind you takes the money off the counter because the bank never put it away, who is really to blaime here? The Bank. You entrusted them with your money, they are responaible for it. I don’t care who the other guy was, they should of done their job and secured the money/data. Someone shouldn’t be able to walk into their network through a huge freakin hole they left open and walk away with your data.

It appears to me, these hackers hack into Playstation Network, because of either their friend Geo. Or. Because they faced recourse of this in some way. But instead of taking it as it is, all these hackers are, is a bunch of retarded dogs. Why? Because only a retarded dog, who’s soon to be put to sleep, craps where it eats, and eats a load of it’s own feces, due to the fact it didn’t think things out clearly enough. If they bring down the network again, fine, let them do it. but the more they attack these networks, I say anytime we find one of their nuts in masks, at one of their rallies or whatever, we beat them to death, for being retarded mutts.

This does not just affect “kids”. The age range for psn is vast. I know a few that are 7 years old and some that are over 60. I also know of a few that are home bound and enjoy the online experience. So whom ever hacked PSN took away something that was looked forward to: interacting with other people. There is no respect given to those that attack the innocent.

not over nothing asskisser – people’s ID information was stolen. did you not pick up on that? and yeah there are “other ways” but that doesn’t mean we’re gonna be cool with having our personal information hacked and losing out on entertainment we PAY to enjoy, just because there is other s*** to do.

what if you went to mcdonald’s – ordered a number 1, with cheese, no tomatos, and bacon – and then you never got the food?

you might say something like, “hey, what the f***, i just paid for that meal. also i’m gay.”

Well it’s not that important because if only one person got his ID stolen then he would have trouble getting it back but since it is a global issue all the people’s ID’s are safe. And credit cards can be canceled so no problems there, besides the people who maybe got money stolen from them can get it back because obviously government is going to get involved in this problem. I’m tired of people talking trash about hackers, hackers are smarter then you or they wouldn’t be called hackers. And if you really care about ps3 network getting hacked why don’t you do something about it? Learn to hack and work on the server security team of sony.

Take away the addiction, and people get pissy. That’s all I see in these comments, other than the few who are posting legit comments and talking to each other civilly. Maybe Sony taking the PSN down is a blessing in disguise. Players can use this time to learn some manners, respect and get the sticks out of their asses. Maybe a complete miracle will occur and all the kiddies who think they’re big and bad cussing and trolling up a storm will grow up.

For all you people saying psn users need to grow up and get off their gaming addiction, I think you need to grow up yourselves. We have a right to be upset, some hackers who are being selfish are taking away something we look forward to doing. What gives them the right to do it? And Yeah Sony had problems with their network, but why do people have to exploit it like this? All they are doing is pissing off the people they claim they are fighting for. My friend came back from Iraq looking forward to playing a game he had to purchase off psn, but guess what, because those hackers had to be a bunch of retards someone who fought for their right to even have the equipment to do that has to suffer. No one is to blame but those hackers who are making innocent people suffer.

Well there is no innocent or guilty when it comes to playing games, thats a nice example you gave about your friend but the hackers didn’t claim anything, they are trying to prove a point and to do that they obviously did something nobody expected.

i dont get that “they are trying to prove a point” s*** – like you KNOW them right?! it couldve just been about getting paid.

why do all hackers have to be these political neo-virtual militiamen?

Whether I know them or don’t know them, that doesn’t matter. And obviously they did it to try to prove a point, it was because of the George Hotz Trial. And rofl learn something about hackers, they didn’t do it to get payed, who would pay for hacking sony? its not like sony is a big government agency or a pentagon database. And if hackers want to make money they would hack a weak bank database. Hackers don’t like being controled so they wouldn’t work for someone, unless there was huge money involved and ps3 network is not that big of a deal

Calm down and be patient, the ps3 network is obviously going to be back online, the question is: how long is it going to take?

  40. Though very annoying for all PS network users, I think Sony had this coming! Their complacent attitude has got them in trouble, I work with a company less than 1/4 the size of Sony and we have better security for our customer databases!

Were now being told the 31st May. That sucks big time. At the end of the day I bought my PS3 to play COD online and not for single player game mode. Sony should have every man in there workforce working to get the PSN back online ASAP as if it’t not back on soon then large drones of people will go to Xbox Live for there online gaming. Overall not a happy gamer

ah man they already took back that may 31st timeline. yeah that definitely sucks that they dont see it coming up by then – ultimately though, i just want it to be a secure system and for sony to quit “crying wolf” with these fake ass due dates.

This will not bode well for folks that are into hacking. Let’s say that Sony, in a worst-case scenario, decides to shut the PSN down forever. The hackers will only have succeeded in strengthening the resolve of the various governments involved with figuring out who is responsible. Not sure how that plays out. I hope it results in the capture and incarceration of the dickheads responsible for this kind of crap. This is probably going to cost people their jobs too. Nice of you little assholes to kick people out of work in this time of economic struggle. What great people, and amazing martyrs. Idiots.

    3 Things to Say:

    1) I will be devastated if they shut down PSN for good.

    2) I like X-box 360, so tell the hackers to hack Nintendo WFC.

    3) Sony needs to hurry up with this crap or my PS3 is going in my failed game console vault. Yes, I have a closet filled with failed game consoles. It’s for my future kids to know what good gaming is. I’m 13. :P

This is really random, but I wish SegaNET was still on for the Sega Dreamcast. Just thought I would throw that out there.
