PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale gets a bit of hate among the gaming community for being a shameless Super Smash Bros. rip-off. I can't argue with that, but Sony has done some amazing marketing and fanservice with the title. The roster, while missing some obvious choices like Crash Bandicoot, is still a who's who of PlayStation's past and present. The latest trailer continues the fine tradition of giving players massive amounts of fan service.
In the vein of last year's live action "Michael" ad, Sony has once again given life to all of your favorite PlayStation characters. It's still a little strange to see just how tall Kratos is against Nathan Drake, but they both still look awesome nonetheless. Check it out:
The comparisons between PlayStation All-Stars and Super Smash Bros. have died down a little bit, but this ad may rekindle those flames once again. You see, Super Smash Bros. also went the live action route back in 1999 for the original N64 release. It's now considered a classic in video game advertising.
The PlayStation All-Stars ad is a little better because it connects it to the player. A lot of gamers have followed these characters, especially Kratos, through the years and are deeply invested in them. It's a little strange to see a kid talking strategy with a 10 foot tall Kratos, but you learn to just roll with it.
Regardless, both ads do their job brilliantly. They get gamers excited for the game in question while heaping mountains of fan service on the players that have been with these characters since the beginning.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will launch on November 20 for both the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.
