If you’re “Big on the Pig,” you might be disappointed to hear that privately owned grocery store chain Piggly Wiggly (Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company) has announced the sale of almost 30 of its stores. According to The Post and Courier, 22 stores will be sold to Bi-Lo and 7 will be sold to Harris Teeter.

While there are more than 600 stores using the Piggly Wiggly branding, the Charleston, South Carolina based chain Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company owns around 100 of the stores. Selling off nearly a third of its stores wasn’t an easy decision to come to, and Piggly Wiggly spokesman Christopher Ibsen said that part of the decision to sell had to do with some of the other grocery store mergers, such as the Kroger-Harris Teeter merger.

“The environment that has heated up dramatically in the past six months in the grocery industry with mergers and acquisitions created an opportunity for us to ensure the value of our employee-owned company,” Ibsen said. The sale price of the 29 stores hasn’t been disclosed.

An estimated 1200 employees work at the Piggly Wiggly stores that are being sold, and all of them are expected to be retained. “We look forward to welcoming these new associates to the Bi-Lo Holdings family and to building on the strength of these stores,” said Randall Onstead, president and CEO of Bi-Lo Holdings. “We will continue to fine-tune our company and network of stores so that we can reinvest in what matters most for our customers.”

The announcement of the almost 30 Piggly Wiggly locations in South Carolina and Georgia being sold comes as Bi-Lo announces selling a few of its stores to Publix. Their stores will be sold in the Charlotte, NC area.

With so many grocery store chains playing musical chairs, will some customers just switch to Walmart? Even though it can take forever to get through the checkout line thanks to only a handful of registers being open, the consistency in branding might be somewhat appreciated.

“With so many grocery store chains playing musical chairs, it might be less of an inconvenience for some customers to just shop at Walmart.”–Nope. I’ll starve first. I WON’T shop at WalMart.

  • Sean Thorton

Already Shop at Wal-Mart and Adis. Prices are lower. You have to go to Wal-Mart when it is not crowded. In this economic climate I have to save all I can.

I love “The Pig” wish we had one closer than Chipley Fl.

the article was interesting until the assinine comment about shopping at walmart – was this a commercial?

  • Gary

This article has nothing to do with walmart I think the comment was in bad taste. Does she have a part time job there ?

    • Frankie

What’s wrong with that, its a good point if u think about it….now we gonna have to wait months while things changed out, get new store cards, just ridiculous that the pig is doing this to their loyal customers. People gotta go somewhere and some probably just stay than change stores again. But yeah walmart sucks.

    • Bob

Yea, eat those fresh shrimp from Asia all you want Erika. I don’t do Walmart after some brand new Christmas lights shorted, sparked and almost burned the house down. U/L Lab sticker not even sure what that means, apparently nothing. Walmart sold out on the US the day Sam was laid to rest. BTW Piggly Wiggly always had adequate staff at the registers and sells local items like the Oyster mushrooms grown in Monks Corner at Mepkin Abbey. What local items does Wallie World have, made in China Inc. Not sure what Buzzy is up to, maybe trying to retire?

Stores are being converted in no more than six days. Close Saturday afternoon and reopen Friday morning. 11 stores with BiLo opened today and 10 more next Friday.

  • Bill

I love BiLo they are AMERICAN

    • James Fenton

You obviously have never worked for BI-LO.

    • Frankie

Good thing my pig is getting bought by bilo because I don’t care about going to them yuppy stores like Harris teeter, Kroger, publix. Just let me buy my groceries, keep your starbucks and mega salad bars out of it.

      • Bill Clinton

get a life,or I’ll make Hillary yo next mayor

      • KC

Are they keeping your store open though? The one near my house is going to be closed. That will mean no nearby grocery stores of any chain.

  • Tami

I’m not grocery shopping at Walmart till they carry more organic foods. I’ll stick to Bi-Lo with their local produce, Full Circle brand products, great customer service, and low prices. Plus if you bring your own bags to Bi-Lo they take off $.05 per bag, all you get at Walmart is a dirty look from the cashier.
All that being said, I’ve grown up in SC and I’m gonna miss The Pig.

I feel sorry for the employees at Piggly Wiggly. BI-LO has a history, if you choose to research them. They purchased Food World….BI-LO began cutting hours, reducing salaries, and overall service to the customers. Food World just recently went bankrupt. About a year and a half ago, they purchased Winn Dixie….within a few months they began cutting positions, reducing fulltime positions to part time (to avoid Obama Care I assume), giving pay cuts and reducing position pay scales. Their meat quality appears to be falling off and the dairy section is often missing key items. BI-LO’s M.O. is to bleed all the profits and then dump the stores.

The piggly wiggly closing has nothing to do with Obama care.People need to read more instead of listening to what they hear from other people.Young people prefer walmart over the pig because of convenient. One stop shopping.

hate to see history disappear. i grew up around a PW in southern LA; now age 64. here in New Orleans, many home grown “institutions” have died out/merged/changed names. the history is just gone.

  • motivationisaplus

They should rename the chain to BIG WIGGLY TEETERS
