phpBB Needs NoFollow

    November 7, 2006

A new way of backlink spamming may require an link alteration from forum kings, phpBB. A quick post from Phil Lenssen at Google Blogoscoped references this Technorati find, a hack (or a tool, if you will) that does blanket sign-ups with 5000 phpBB forums.

The hack provides a modifiable field where users can place their site’s URL. When the phpBB forum hack creates these accounts, the newly created member page will then link back to the site entered into the aforementioned field, making this one of the more black hat-worthy tools to come across in a while. However, don’t take my word for it. The blog promoting this “service” issued this note to put those who think this is a spam attempt at ease:

It’s not really spamming – I’m not talking about spamming those forums – I’m talking about registering there – not posting anything, only registering…

Far be it for me to disagree, but I think Matt Cutts would categorize phpBB forum accounts developed for the sole purpose of giving backlinks as spam. Of course, I could be wrong. Although, just to be sure, perhaps the developers at phpBB should follow Lenssen’s advice and just attach “nofollow” attributes to their outgoing member page links.
