Pet food recall by Diamond Pet Foods has been expanded to include more brands. The recall, which has currently been issued only for the company’s line of dog food, centers around certain products manufactured at Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina plant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently discovered a strain of Salmonella Infantis lurking within select brands crafted at the plant, which includes some Kirkland Signature products, as well as Costco’s private label. The rare strain has already infected 14 people, and can be transmitted by simply handing the tainted food or having contact with any animal that has consumed it.

In order to see if the bag you currently have in your possession contains the contaminated product, the FDA has suggested you check the packaging for the following information: the production code must have both a number “3″ in the ninth position AND an “X” in the 11th position. The “best-before dates” for the recalled brands are Dec. 9, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013.

Kirkland Signature brands listed in the recall are as follows:

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Adult Dog Lamb, Rice & Vegetable Formula (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Adult Dog Chicken, Rice & Vegetable Formula (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Mature Dog Chicken, Rice & Egg Formula (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Healthy Weight Dog Formulated with Chicken & Vegetables (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Maintenance Cat Chicken & Rice Formula (Best Before Dec. 9, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Healthy Weight Cat Formula (Dec. 9, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Formula for Dogs (Dec. 9, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013)

As mentioned, other Diamond Pet Foods products have been included in the recall, as well. Here are a few other brands that you should probably stay away from for the time being:

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul

Presently, the only states that are affected by the recall are Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This list is probably subject to change. To stay up-to-date with information regarding this recall, swing by the FDA’s recall altert page.
