Pee Wee Herman, the alternate identity of actor Paul Reubens, made famous in the 80s from a couple of TV shows and movies (namely Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Tim Burton’s greatest acheivement in my opinion), is back. You probably know the story. He was busted for exposing himself in a theater and Pee Wee Herman pretty much fell off the face of the planet, although Reubens has popped up from time to time.

But I reiterate. He’s back. He’s got a new show on the way (live), and has kicked off his return with an appearance on the Jay Leno Show, and of course…a Twitter account. Now Pee Wee can express himself anyway he wants to via the ever-growing social network – the one that appears to be a celebrity magnet.

Pee Wee Herman Tweets

He appeared on Twitter last night under a verified account, and promised a phone call for someone that retweeted his return. Mashable points to a video taken by none other than blogger Guy Kawasaki of Pee Wee’s first tweet:

Watch Pee Wee’s conversation with Leno in the clip below.

It’s weird to say about a performance artist who did the bulk of his work 20 years ago, but seeing Pee Wee again is a breath of fresh air. We’ve got tickets to his live show (not the premiere, but close), and were happy to see him on Leno, where he reminded us most of Andy Kaufman … stream of consciousness combined with a deep, strict inner life that made us scratch our heads as we laughed. Jay seemed to have fun, although he was perplexed frequently by Pee Wee’s banter.

I think the phone call for a re-tweet was a very cool idea. Interactive rewards like that should be used more frequently.
