YouTube Account Shut Down Over Police Brutality

Reuters writes:

The video-sharing Web site YouTube has suspended the account of a prominent Egyptian anti-torture activist who posted videos of what he said was brutal behaviour by some Egyptian policemen, the activist said.

Wael Abbas said close to 100 images (sic) he had sent to YouTube were no longer accessible, including clips depicting purported police brutality, voting irregularities and anti-government demonstrations.

Cyber Monday Spending Hit $733 Million

Merchants affected by Yahoo’s system outage on Monday have more reasons to be upset, as US consumers parted with $733 million online for the day.

Universities have been opting for email services managed by Microsoft or Google as a desirable alternative to running email as an in-house operation.

The Monday after Thanksgiving contained a hellish several hours for Yahoo and merchants on its order fulfillment platform.

Survey: Online Shopping Is Easier

The ability to shop in your underwear, not necessarily get a better deal, is what’s driving most people to do 25-50 percent of their holiday shopping online. No malls, no traffic, no crowds, no all-day outings.

And that sounds good to me, too.

That’s not justification to raise prices. E-tailers still need to compete with other e-tailers.

Googler Moves On To Meetup

Google’s doing amazingly well, so any sort of “abandoning a burning ship” metaphor is way off base.  Still, a lot of employees are leaving the search giant, and the latest to do so is a man named Dominic Preuss.

Like Adulterous Women? Google Can Help

Google makes what you might call "moral" judgments with whom is expressly forbidden from advertising on its network. Adultery, though, is apparently not a topic the company will take a stance against.

Google’s Stock Still Creates Uncertainty

Compared to most of the past month, today was a pretty uneventful day for Google’s stock (it gained $7.57).  As such, now seems as good a time as any to take a deep breath, sit back, and consider where it might go in the future.

Debunking WordPress SEO “Expert” Articles

I am going to attempt to debunk almost every Wordpress SEO "Expert" article ever written, and in some respects this article even debunks some of the things I have written in the past.

Verizon Changes Heart, Opens Up
· 1

Verizon reversed itself today by announcing the company will open its network to wireless devices, software, and applications not offered by the company. This comes just two months after the company sued the federal government to block openness requirements for the winner of the 700 MHz band of wireless spectrum.

Gmail Goes Out of Bounds

I really like Google’s Gmail program. It’s truly my favorite email service. They also do a great job scanning through my emails for relevant keywords and phrases that they match with their advertisers.

Dell Will Sell Google Search Appliance, Mini

If something’s both manufactured and sold by one company, does it make much sense to call it by another corporation’s name?  I’m not sure, but it’s something Google and Dell may want to address; Dell now handles a lot of things related to the Google Search Appliance and Google Mini.

Google’s Energy Initiative

Google issued a press release stating they want to create a research & development group with the goal of creating “electricity from renewable energy sources that will be cheaper than electricity produced from coal.”

The initiative is called “RE<C” and is supposed to be receiving “tens of millions” from Google in 2008. From the release:

Great Idea for an Event Organizer

What a great idea for an event organizer… I’ve often wondered why event planners don’t come out with "official" tags for people to tag entries on blogs, photos on flickr, videos on youtube etc… (many people, including yours truly post photos and create our own tags) but here’s a cool idea that I never thought of.. what about networking groups on LinkedIn, facebook and others?

That’s exactly what Nokia is doing for their Nokia World event… attendees can coonect by being accepted into these special groups… nice idea!

Google Talk Gadget Learns More Languages

Some announcements are surprising, while others are expected.

This is neither; although we didn’t know it was going to happen, it’s actually quite logical that the Google Talk Gadget would gain support for 19 more languages.

HP Blog Printing
One of the frustrating things about some websites, including many blogs, concerns printing.

Let’s say you’re on a site reading an article or post and you want to print out a hard copy. It’s common to get a result that runs into pages, more than you actually need, and not formatted for the purpose. Worse, especially if a website uses frames, you may get lots of blank pages before (or after) you get that one page you want.

Adobe Technical Support Woeful

I like Adobe Acrobat Connect. The Professional version has a lot of advantages for enterprise conferencing use. I even appear as a frequent guest speaker on Adobe’s public educational webinar series.

But fair is fair, and it is time for Adobe to face up to a glaring deficiency in its offering. Technical support for the product is woeful.

Mind you, what is available is pretty good. The online documentation for how to accomplish common tasks is clear and well written. The problem comes when that documentation doesn’t satisfy your needs as a user.

A Chat with Robert Bergquist, CEO of Widemile

A little while back I got the chance to speak with Robert Bergquist, CEO of widemile (specializing in multivariate testing and optimization – based in Seattle).
