Operation Fastlink Conficts Software Pirate

The U.S. Department of Justice said that Jathan Desir, 26, of Iowa City, has pleaded guilty to charges related to distributed pirated software, games, movies and music over the Internet.

The University of Iowa Student was the first to be convicted as a result of the US Department of Justice “Operation Fastlink”. Operation Fastlink purpose is to reduce internet related piracy.

According to news reports Desir is personally responsible for as much as $200,000 in losses to the industry. Desir pleaded guilty to felony charges of copyright infringement and conspiracy, and now faces a maximum of 15 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 18th.

“The Department of Justice is committed to prosecuting all forms of intellectual property theft,” stated Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wray of the DOJ’s criminal division. “There is no hiding in cyberspace, and there is no hiding behind borders.”
