The words had scarcely come out of his mouth before people were on the phone to spread the word. Opera CEO promised that if downloads of the beta browser reached 1 million, he’ll swim from Norway to the USA, stopping only to have a cup of hot chocolate at his mother’s house in Iceland.

According to an article on The Inquirer website (with and “I,” not an “E”), Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software took this oath when downloads of the browser had reached 600,000 in 48 hours.

The rush in download demand spurred Opera Software to install more servers to handle the traffic.

Says Carsten Fischer, VP Desktop, Opera Software. “When download numbers reached 120 per second one hour after the release, our servers had serious problems dealing with all the requests. We had prepared for heavy traffic, but this exceeded our wildest dreams.”

Opera 8 is putting itself up against Firefox as a speedy, secure, and easy to use browser, and is available as a free download for a limited time.

The bold statement did come with a qualifier. Downloads must reach 1,000,000 by Saturday at 9 AM Norwegian time (CET).
