Lots of people at Search Champs were discussing Yahoo’s CFO, Susan Decker’s quote that Yahoo is okay being second to Google.

“We don’t think it’s reasonable to assume we’re going to gain a lot of share from Google,” Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker said in an interview. “It’s not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share.”

I couldn’t believe it when I heard it, and I wish I had more time to discuss it. Needless to say, here’s the nutshell: If you don’t have the desire to win, if you don’t have the killer instinct, then you are only going to hurt your company. I’m hoping that this isn’t the general Yahoo feeling, or else they’ll never have a shot, but if Ms. Decker really feels this way, then she should resign from the company. There is no place in this industry for people who don’t think they can win.

Needless to say, no one from MSN wants to be in second or third place.
