According to a new poll released by Yahoo! Small Business and Harris Interactive, 83% of holiday shopping this year will be done online. This reiterates research from other firms done earlier that this year’s holiday season will be strong on the Internet for a number of reasons.

80% of those said they would shop online from small businesses. Yahoo Small Business commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct this research after results by other companies like Jupiter Research showed great promise for the coming shopping season.

30% of holiday shoppers will probably do at least 50% of their shopping online and 63% of the respondents said niche retailers are the best places to shop.

One major influence on the shoppers was gas prices. About 80% of respondents said they would do shopping online if gas prices remained high. While prices have come down significantly, oil prices on the market started climb back up in anticipation of a winter storm. This could drive prices at the pump higher as the holiday season comes into full swing.

The nationwide survey covered 1,813 U.S. online adults who plan to do holiday shopping. The survey was from October and measured sentiment among the general online population. The problem with this survey and others like it is that it only measures online users who are predisposed toward online activities anyway. While the numbers do show strength, this study isn’t without its flaws.
