Physicist and philanthropist Fred Kavli to set up three prizes as “more daring” rivals to Alfred Nobel’s signature award.

Mr. Kavli came to the US 50 years ago with a few hundred dollars and parlayed that into a $340+ million USD fortune. Already a generous giver to science institutes, he wants to give more.

Three prizes for astrophysics, neuroscience and nanotechnology will be set up and awarded every even year beginning in mid-September 2008, a month before the Nobel Prizes would be announced.

“I think these fields will bring great discoveries in future,” he said. “We will never find all the answers, never run out of questions.”

Mr. Kavli hopes to reward those who make breakthroughs more quickly than the current Nobel process.
