sucks...Google is focusing
sucks...Google is focusing more on $$$ than the end user and they did the same with youtube changes recently ending up with a lot of people and the little guy saying it sucks...and it does. So this is 2 for 2 now that they should crash and burn for these stupid changes.
googles new image page
Googles new image results format is terrible ,it takes ages to load ,it looks cramped and crowded.you are unable to change it back;the switch to the basic version dosn't work for more than one search.
No problem
I don't think it matters at all that Google aesthetically looks more and more like Bing every update...as long as its still Google underneath and you get the better search results its no problem!
Google's Bing-ification
Thanks for the article, Chris.
No i don't like it.
It's bad functional web design, actually, which doesn't take into account the latency inherent in loading so many images on one page (scrolling ability aside). Folks with slower systems (and yes there are still plenty of them out there), and even our fast systems in the office here, have a far less snappy experience now finding, viewing and otherwise dealing with the image search results.
Another facet is that implementing rollovers and other auxiliary interface aspects directly on this now performance-bloated page slows things down further and clutters the interface itself horribly. The efficient and smartly simple design previously in place worked very well and allowed for a fair amount of information at a glance. Paging - N at a time per page - is always a preferable model for a data driven display interface, imo and a better use of resources.
Lastly, each of these features are very very Bing-like and, speaking objectively, they are things i feel make Bing a much less enjoyable and functional interface to use. It's very disappointing to see Google going down this road. They should, at least, have some obvious place to set a preference for this mode, so that those who don't care for it, or who want to actually get some work done, can configure the system for that.
So, no i don't like it and, like the other person here, will (sadly) use other search tools now.

its all users opinions. I
its all users opinions. I used bing maybe three times, hated it. Google I have been using it for years with no issues.
The info you speak of that you can scroll over for, is already displayed for every image in the classic view. Why would I want to use my touchpad to touch every image to get size, link, etc... when the classic view has it all displayed?
It looks like a middle school collage when you see all the images adjacent together.
Google needs to stop paying the people behind this epic fail. If you invest in them take your $$$ out till you something more promising from them, if they keep this up they will allow competitors to play catch up.
sorry for the double post i replied to wrong comment:(

Time saving?!?! I can see
Time saving?!?! I can see all details in classic view without mouse over.

It's comments like this that make me wonder... do you work for Google PR?
Every other search engine on the planet returns more accurate search results than Google!
Google is nothing more than the biggest spamvertizer and the only good reports we get these days are coming from their propaganda team.
google is the start of many
google is the start of many professional research for scientific study. If you use advance search, select the file format (.pdf for published articles and such), many many professionals use google for initial inquiry and background information.
yahoo and bing not so much
No, they are not improving
No, they are not improving anything at all; au contraire, they are making it worse. At least they could give us the option to choose the design we want.
it doesnt save it, you must
it doesnt save it, you must always search, scroll down, click link to switch.
google should leave it alone it was better in the classic view.

eye candy loving bing is ripping off of apples eye candy game plan.
google is confused and needs to stop copying off an old gimmick.
function over form. make it work and work good, keep it simple smarty.
google image search
I'm not quite sure google has thought this through properly.
They always lived by making things simple & easy for the user experience, to me this is taking steps back.

Google shouldnt try to be like Bing
Google was so much better than Bing. They shouldn't try to imitate an inferior search engine like Bing or Yahoo. I went to do an image search a couple of days ago, and noticed the change and hoped it was a glitch, but feared that Google had lost their minds and decided to be like Bing.
I really hope that they come back to their senses and put their image search back the way it was... It used to be my favorite image search engine, but if they keep it like Bing, then I will probably find a different search engine for images.
Who cares what Google is
Who cares what Google is doing?
They stopped being a search engine a long time ago. Now they are just another ad-spammer and are off my computers for good. And soon they will be off all of the computers belonging to users on our Internet service.
Touching the 3rd Rail in Search Engines
Many politicians learned early on that screwing with Social Security got them voted out of office; now known as the 'Third rail in politics'. Touch it and you die. I am thinking that the marketing and engineering folks at Google might learn the from this lesson?
It may look pretty but
It may look pretty but practical it is NOT. To me it looks like a waste of my time sorting and therefore a big turn off.
Google changed Images and
Google changed Images and News and I don't like either. It's like designing a new phone with the buttons in different places.
We're used to the old interface. Why change it?
The reason Google has the market share is because of content. If Bing is gaining in certain areas, Google should work the algo, not paint the UI
If you mean the update
If you mean the update popups, try MSCONFIG at the DOS prompt and look for Google items listed in startup items. If that doesn't work try a registry scan. Advance Uninstaller Pro is a handy tool.
Counterintuitive Design
The old design is one of the reasons Google's image search was so good. The new design is much more difficult to use, slower, and less effective for searching. Why? because in the past you coudl, at a glance, get the info about the image - tell if it was from a location where you might be able to visit and get more info, user the image, etc (whatever it is you're actually searching for an image for) and you could see the size. Now you need to manually hover over every image to get this same info... takes 3-4 times longer to actually find what you need.
Hate it.
Just move your mouse over
Just move your mouse over the image and a small window comes up where you can see source info....
Google is following bing.
Google is following bing. This means bing is getting google think about the competition. But overall not good image search page design from google as it doesn't ease the user experience.
i just want to know how to
i just want to know how to change it back
@James The problem for
@James
The problem for Google is that Bing, while hardly making a dent in the overall search market, has had huge increases in cetrtain areas, such as image search, travel, local, and shopping. In some of those areas, Bing has had more than 100% growth. this could be bad for Google if left unchecked since these areas are a great source of ad revenue.
Why?
Google is systematically destroying everything it stands for, It's popularity is largely due to the simple way in which users can search and are served results. Why is it necessary for the worlds number one search engine to try to emulate Bing?
