How to Promote my site now on Google

Hi there,

Never forget the first rules in SEO: It changes all the time. So, Google has made a change, which is not the first one. Do the basics right and you will have a sound long-term strategy.

Good unique content, links (one-way and link exchange), no keyword stuffing, and good promotion of your business.

Once you got that right, you need to monitize your site. Use 3 to 4 or more income streams. I prefer google adsense and started a blog on Google Adsense Tips .

Cheers.

"I do blame a lot on the changes Google made since over 65% of our web traffic came from Google."

Maybe you should THANK google for the past revenue they have provided you. Things change in tech. Complaining because what used work no longer does is not going to help things.

RE: Its costing us a lot

Dear Guest ("Its costing us a lot"),
Google owes you nothing. If you want to guarantee a consistently high ranking pay for Google Adwords.
You've been content to get free advertising via free placement in search engine results for 15 years. If you are on brink of bankruptcy due to a Google index change then your business was not well-designed and resilient in the first place: i.e. you need a wider breadth of ways that people come across the site URL (e.g. URL in print media advertising; or tie-in articles with local newspapers where for example they report results on some relevant survey taken on your site) than 65% of people come across your site via Google searches.

Things keep improving for me - 2010 looking GREAT!

There are many updates every year, and this has been going on for years. This is nothing new. Every significant update some people start crying like babies and blaming Google. Things keep improving for me. So far I'm up almost 20% from last year's revenues. More traffic and higher revenues. Put my first web site on the internet in January 1996 and things have been up hill ever since. My only 'down' year was 2007. If a site has good content, it will thrive. However, anyone who bases a business on the internet, particularly based upon ranking high in search engines, is taking a great risk. If you go down in flames, you can't blame Google. You have to blame yourself for not doing what is necessary to stay ahead of the competition. I'm so tired of hearing people complain that Google isn't ranking them where they think they should be it's laughable. Year after year, web sites that can't make it blame Google for their own failings. If someone chooses to make their living on the internet, they should know the risks involved and quite complaining when things don't go their way.

You seem to be making Google

You seem to be making Google responsible for your business' demise. However, I'm sure you were thrilled when they had you ranked #1. YOUR complete dependence upon them is what cost you. That's not there fault.

google

I think more and more webmasters need to start looking for other ways to drive traffic and stop letting google have all the control. Someday they may start needing us for a change.

advertisers vs users

Google serves two groups; adveritsers and users. They have to balance the two, and they don't want the same things.

I wish Google searched better for what you really wanted to find instead of the things that wanted to be found the most. I search on the exact name of a site and get pages of maybes and city guides first.

As webmasters get better at comming up on more searches, Google has to change so that users can find what they want to find.

I don't need to know where to get best price on artheritis for my cat.

The update hasn't directly

The update hasn't directly affected any of our business yet or our clients. Is there anyway to get a figure on how much of the index changed?

Get a Life - There are plenty of search engines out there

There are plenty of search engines out there. If you don't like Google, go for Bing or one of the others. Google haters like you are just people who can't get their sites ranked highly. Cry me a river. Google typically gives decent search results which is why so many people use it.

I think every time G makes a

I think every time G makes a change it just spawns hundreds of more theories that have little facts to back them up.

You have to be kidding...

Google doesn't have a monopoly. You want Google investigated *ONLY* because Google isn't giving you the organic rankings *YOU* think you should get. You want 'algorithms' that will favour YOU. If your rankings are dropping, why not take personal responsibility instead of blaming Google and crying for regulation of, of all things, a search engine and advertising company? There is no bias of pay click other than in your mind. Keep the tin foil hat on. Even if there is bias, Google is a company and has the right to run its self how ever it wants. And if you can't afford AdWords, tough luck. I don't use AdWords myself, and never have, nor do I plan to. I get plenty of organic traffic. I work with my sites every day. Other than 2007, since 1996 my sites have continued to grow both in visitors and revenue. I suggest you stop crying and get to work if you want to make money on the internet. And take some personal responsibility instead of blaming Google for not giving you the organic rankings you think you should have. I'm a person who is strongly in favour of regulation of certain businesses (banks, investment companies, energy companies, food producers, medicine and medical device producers, etc.), but regulation of Google is nonsense.

Google updates in two data sets

I operate SEO across several UK sites. Most have benefitted from the update but for several weeks now show different results against the same keywords depending on time of day the search is made. I have regularly found that from around 9am (GMT) they have some top positions on Google - 2 and 3 - but by around 3.30pm drop to 18 and 10.
This appears consistent each day suggests there are two data sets being used to present results. I guess this is part of the update process and evenutally will populate all Google servers with the same data - just hope in my case it ends up with the positions 2 and 3!

Ian

...an example for making things worse

Just after our "mayday" currently the TOP 10 results for our main key words start to show up "new sites" like old online news with only one short press article (4 lines long) referring to the key word.

At the same time long existing sites with richt content (regarding the keyword) are no longer listed on the first result page.

If google wants to improve things with that change in algorithm I actually can't see any benefit from that!

SEO and All Search Engines

Hello All!

All Search Engines Constantly change algorithims, etc, etc etc...WHY??? Because there is no money in free searches for them!!!!! Get It --They Make their money on advertising!!!!! Wake Up!!!! Its just better to pay the price upfront and make demands on them that they inprove your ranking!!! Funny how Money Talks - And Money Has Always Talked through out History!!!! It's all about the money and that is why you want the ranking right? So dont be cheap!! I dont like the systems either, however I am smart enough to pay the piper!

Google Will Eventually Screw You!

If you are making money via Google Organic or Google Paid Search don't quit your day job! Google is constantly changing stuff that will eventually screw you.

Google has killed my organic search and has de-listed and re-listed my site for no apparent reason I'm aware of. On one of my sites, Google PR has gone from 0 to 1 to 3 to 4 to 0 to 4, which makes absolutely no sense. I've received threatening emails from Google that my Adwords account will be deactivated when I did not violate any of their rules.

In the past I could speak to an Adwords Rep.. Not any more. Forget getting someone on the phone. Send an email and your lucky to get a response. If they do respond it's a canned response that never answers your question.

It's very unfortunate that Yahoo and Bing don't control a third each of the search market. Google has too much power and I'm hoping Yahoo and Bing can take away market share from Google.

Google does indeed suck!

My point of view

I used to search with G and almost all the time found what I was looking for at the first 1~6 pages, as G changed I went to the 3~10 page to find what I was looking for.

Today I search with B and I can find what I am looking for at 1~2 page all the time.

SO LONG G !

Thanks you, very good

Thanks you, very good

No Affects Yet

I can't say I've noticed any real affects on my sites yet. It's quite normal for sites to do the "Google Dance" where they jump up and down in the SERPs, but hopefully they won't jump down and stay there.

Different way

I know when google changes its algorithms some people lose out, but also others gain. This has to happen in google as if things stayed the same then the larger companies would really be able to monopolise the business (making thousands bust). I cannot for the life of believe why people think this is a bad thing, yes maybe your not making as much money but then this gives another person an oppurtuninty.

The comment above is a typical example "hes been around for 15 years and has been ranked number 1" now down to 4 or 5 so you must of made a lot of money over the 15 years then and now its someone elses turn to make money. Google is a business that changes like every business does, you need to change to accomodate this.

google sucks

Google cost everyone but those that get listed in the top positions. And they only benefit until the next update. It's sad that we let one company control our web incomes to such a large degree.

And, their results are not that good really... has anyone besides us ever really ever questioned that?

Google sucks. Just wish others would finally see that.

No change noticed

To be honest I've had noticed no change to the number of visitors to my main site - although the adsense income has dropped this month.

The positions that I monitor have remained rock solid - 12 year old site tweaked on a regular basis but no real changes since the beginning of the month apart from a couple of blog postings.

All internal pages have links from the home page and many have links from external sites - this is not an e-commerce site with 1000's of items but a regular site with information and articles on almost every page.

Sales have not changed either and have remained constant.

Google Now Rewards SE algorithm Manipulation

I always thought Google's catch cry was about providing relevant information to the searcher. Well this latest roll out, does nothing but allow the BIG companies with deep pockets to manipulate the Google algorithm.

As an example I reside in Australia, before the the Google update I, like my fellow Australians had the ability to conduct a country specific search only. Now that's be taken away. Instead, I'm bombarded with off shore sites which are hosted off shore that have manipulated Google to look like they are AU targeted. Which in fact they are not.

However I have an AU TLD, it's hosted in Australia and provides relevant information. Fortunately I'm no slouch when it come to SEO. I can still maintain some decent SERPS. Still making a buck shouldn't be this hard.

No one should have to contend with offshore sites or any site using techniques to spam Google, worse, Google rewarding them for manipulating their search algorithm.

A very low percentage of

A very low percentage of those ads get clicked on. It's all about Google getting richer as if they weren't rich enough already.

I don't see any change

I am not seeing much change. I see a lot of people commenting about all their rankings dropping, not getting anymore traffic... I am just the opposite. Our sales have skyrocketed! We are getting TWICE as much traffic this month, and sales have more than doubled.
Mayday? No... Hail Mary!

Google shopping

We have noticed a big change in our Google shopping results. We have been completely taken over by eBay and Amazon listings which aren't even as relevant to the search term. It's very frustrating.

Google and ranking

Small stores like mine cannot compete with big businesses with big money, we are never on page 1 because we cannot spend so much money. I opened an on-line store because I am now retired and thought it would be a side earner, I was wrong, I spent so much money on Seo, directories, time it is just unbelievable, and I can see big competitors, big companies still at the top. So I have now decided that I will use local newspapers and directories, trade magazines,,... to advertise it is cheaper and at least I can modify my home page whenever I want to do so. So here you are I am dropping Google and their rich friends. Hope more people like will do the same so Google starts rotating the listing instead of having the same businesses at the top.
Here you have it Google I am leaving you, you are f i r e d.
