Question of clarification
Um you say "- 97% of the Bing.com audience overlapped with Google Search in the week prior to launch " ... how could you credit this traffic to Bing if its before Bing was launched ? This would technically be LIVE or MSN search traffic. I think you were inferring that it was the 1st week of launch but a week before it was annouced .. no ?
Answering question
In the week prior to the official launch, Microsoft announced brand "Bing", and some 719K visitors went to http://www.bing.com where they were greeted by a welcome message and a video which promised a new search experience.
RE: Question of clarification
Bing became usable before its official launch date.
The initial high overlap is
The initial high overlap is probably result of split testing by development and SEO community to see how the engine works and where we rank on bing compared to our Google SERPs.
It Shows Ta Go Ya
Google really IS the big competition. If this were not true, then the others would also see some change in overlap. As it is, the data illustrate how Google users are trying out Bing, which therefore illustrates that the only competitor worth fighting with is Google.
Overlap holding steady
Hi! I wrote the original Compete blog for this story, and actually the huge 97% Google-Bing overlap was seen just in that first week between when the Bing brand was announced and when Bing officially launched. SINCE launch, the overlaps have held remarkably steady, but to your point--Chris--it is significant to note that 2/3 of all Bing users continue to overlap with Google (compared to only 1/3 overlap with Yahoo!). Shows that Google's audience tends to be less loyal overall -- it's an audience always looking for the new best thing. Jury's out as to whether that's Bing.
RE: Overlap holding steady
Hi Taylor,
Thanks for the input. I see your point about how the overlap has held steady in the weeks following the launch. It makes sense that it was greater upon launch as people were still "exploring" Bing. I've actually discussed the initial boom of Bing enthusiasm surrounding its launch in the past, and that it kind of skews the whole picture. But you're right - the audience is always looking for something better. Good thing for Google that it is always looking to improve. It will be tough for Bing or anyone to really get to that level of competition.
Whoa
That's amazing how that's happened. I'm curious to see Google's reaction to this and what they're doing in response . . .
