Flash on WinMobile and some Symbian
If you have WinMo version 5 or 6, go here to get a browser with FULL flash abilities. http://www.skyfire.com/
It's called SkyFire. I've used it for a few months now and can do things like watch HULU and every other flash site I've tried.
The reasons
I read something a while ago why the iPhone and Blackberry don't have flash.
The iPhone dev contract states that you can not develop an app that allows other apps to run. Flash would be an app that allows other apps to run. Apple would need to change their contract to either remove that restriction or make an exception. If they make an exception for Adobe what about for Valve and all the other program/app providers out there with their own distrubution systems.
For the Blackberry Adobe said in an interview they they don't want to layer programing languages on top of one another (Blackberry: ActionScript 3->Flash->Java->"Internal Native RIM Code"->Hardware, PC: ActionScript 3->Flash->Native Code->Hardware), it would slow down flash. I am a Balckberry programmer so I can understand this but they can just talk with RIM and and get access to the internal code to speed it up.
Market
When it makes economic sense (including risk mitigation) then iPhone and BB will have Flash on it.
Meantime, let the other guys catch up a bit, eh? Isn't this what capitalism is all about?
Slow Pokes
I guess my next smart phone wont be an iphone or a blackberry. Both are overrated anyways. Sucks though, I dont know why they wouldnt support it. And to those saying performance, how is it all the other phone OS's can handle it. It looks like it's the poor performance of the iPhone and Blackberry OS's that seems to be holding back.
As for the iPhone App Store. There is so much crap on there. What are they really controlling?? Even if you dont put flash apps in the iphone app store or blackberrys app service, make it available for the web and local files. My damn PS3 can display flash yet these stupid phones that cost more than a PS3 (if you dont enter a contract) yet don't have one of the most widely used technologies of modern computing. Pathetic.
Yes but, no but...
The iPhones not crap, just restricted, but then that's what makes it work. I think if it were less restricted there would be all sorts of random stuff appearing on it which to some extent gets filtered by the App store.
I used to be a WinMo fan, but after a run of disappointing SmartPhones (last was HTC TyTN II) I gave up and turned to the dark side. The iPhone generally did all I needed of it (including LogMeIn ignition remote access to PCs) except support my Bluetooth stereo headphones, but that's been fixed (ish) now with the release of OS 3.0
As for using the App store I never bother to look for apps any more, I usually read a review first or get recommended on to an app.
Overall I am happier with my iPhone than I was with WinMo phones, but then everyone has different requirements.
HTML5
I think that HTML5 is another factor in these decisions. A lot of companies understandably want Flash (and Silverlight, etc) to go away. From the Safari browser features page:
http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html
"HTML 5 Media Support
Websites can now deliver rich, interactive media as easily as they deliver images. The first browser to support HTML 5 audio and video tags, Safari helps developers create media-rich sites that don’t require additional plug-ins. The media tags also offer a rich scripting API, allowing developers to create powerful new controls as well as controls that match the style of the page."
Not one browser fully
Not one browser fully supports HTML 5 yet. The W3C is still working on it, so the fact that it is not even finished, means it wont be the norm for a long time (same thing as CSS3). That being said, even if it were to support the Media player HTML5 controls, who's developing sites that use it? The answer would be so few that it, at this point in time anyways, it'd be nearly pointless. And to release a phone now based on framework that isn't even complete, would require so many revisions in the following years that again, it would raise more issues than it solves.
Could it have something to do with power consumption
Flash consumes a great deal processing power which also consumes battery life. Large screen phones especially ones with sealed batteries (there is only one like that) would be dead in an hour of use.
I hadn't thought of this.
I hadn't thought of this. It's a very good theory.
Thanks for your input.

Its Frustrating
Hi Jeremy,
Its very frustrating when I can't watch certain Flash enabled websites and videos on my iPod. I think its about time that Apple made a deal with Adobe and provided Flash support on iPhones and iPods.
Hope that day comes soon. Thanks for the post.

Finish The Article!!!
... and tell us why iPhone and Bberry aren't getting the flash app?
hello?

Uh, hello. If you didn't see
Uh, hello.
If you didn't see in the article Apple doesn't want there app store competing with Flash & AIR based applications.
Also Apple has quicktime, which some might say is in competition with Flash (I don't really see it that way though).
...and blackberry hasn't really given a reason why they won't getting it.
Not to mention the possible security vulnerabilities Flash could open up on mobile devices.

I'm guessing RIM isn't
I'm guessing RIM isn't adopting flash due to security issues. Flash opens up loads of potential vurnerabilities.
What security issues?
I mean no technology is purely secure, but how on earth do you arrive at this theory. As a Flash developer I can tell you there's a great deal of security in flash. Everything from not allowing one swf, to load other content from a different domain, to not allowing files to be downloaded to the local disk without direct user-input. If you think about it, the fact these devices render HTML and Javascript is where the vulnerablities lie. Javascript has no real security measures preventing a malicious script from running, where as Flash is a precompiled asset that has plenty of security measures built in. Point is, what flash site have you ever heard of as being malicious, or providing large security holes. That said, Flash lite is found on so many current mobile phone's it'd blow your mind.
Did you just say...
Flash is a compiled app?
erm...No it's not! it uses a dynamic scripting language. No compilation there!
If you want a compiled RIA, have a look at silverlight!
Good point. It'll be
Good point.
It'll be interesting to see if this is their reasoning for not adding Flash.

Likely 2 factors
I would bet it's price and performance that hold those 2 phone makers back from adding a Flash plug-in to their browsers and even the system. Adobe likely charges too much for this inclusion. Flash can also struggle with higher end animations and video, so putting it on slower devices might show their lack of horsepower. Apple also has a stake in QuickTime video and the interoperability of Flash swfs and flvs (video) with iTunes for transferring between computer and phone.
It is sad but it's going to be a while I bet before they add this.
What is the big deal? Why
What is the big deal? Why not just offer Flash on the iPhone & blackberry. People pay enough for the phones, they should offer everthing possible to improve user interaction.
Why should we care if the
Why should we care if the iphone isn't getting flash? Isn't there enough pointless apps for the iphone without having the app store flooded with garbage.
Okay, so you don't see the
Okay, so you don't see the value in having Flash 10 on the iPhone... but I guarantee that loads of other iPhone users would love having it.
