MICROPAYMENTS - the fly in the soup
The content micro-payment business model has one major flaw. Content across all venues has decreased in value. To use an example from another industry: In 1888, the Sears began a long successful ascent into the American market. Farmers could get a product that previously was unavailable to them. The Sears catalog served its purpose for the time. Another example: A student, let’s say in the 1950’s, working on a research paper, sat for hours in the library writing quotes from sources unavailable from anywhere else. The library served its purpose. Up until a few years ago, the local newspapers provided a local consolidated communication service for advertisers, entertainment centers, readers and journalists. The world changed. As a result, the core utility of the newspaper lost value. The newspapers think it has valuable content. No! Content is worth close to zero. What they should focus on is their core business – local communication in all medium formats. Peter Drucker, the famed business guru once stated that the decline on the train industry was because they thought they were in the train business. They should have realized they were in the TRANSPORTATION business. This would have allowed them to re-invent themselves and adopt to the changing currents of the time.
I doubt if micropayment will
I doubt if micropayment will work. In case I need to choose between a paid content site or not, I will definitely go to free content site. I'm pretty sure that there will be free articles over the net that can supply enough information for my needs.
