I'm not the most experienced online marketer or SEO expert but I've always been told not to buy links. My understanding is that Google will penalize you for this. I know that a lot of sites do just that, sell links.

I would appreciate more on this subject myself.

If I've to add something; it is simple be aware where you link and who links to you to avoid bad neighbourhood. On the other hand, it's good to check the exsisting link over your website to remove the 'dead ones'.
