actually,it's twitter that gets the seo for rich content(tweets) and topic relevancy.In turn,it spits out targeted traffic to tweeters.Iit's a win-win situation if accepted as such.

I use twitter for promoting my site but do not get the back links from any trusted web site. I think twitter is good for increasing the Traffic of your site but there is a doubt that you will get a back link, it is just a chance. :)

I just started on twitter a week ago. my first update was about building links for my site and within a few hours a fellow webmaster/ college student had found me , by topic i suppose and began to follow.. Next day i had 48 links to his posts. I guess the question is how effective the links are, if organic tops all then yay! So how worried should i be about bad links. Also can anyone tell me exactly where the links are. all i did was post a comment on an article then i had links, i'm not clear on how that works..?????

It's all about the traffic that it generates though, not the links. If you get enough people seeing a link to your site, you're bound to get a percentage of the visit it. If you get a percentage visiting it, you're quite likely that some of them will link to it if they found it useful. As long as the numbers and percentages are workable, then it stands to reason that it will generate you links.

I have heard do much hype but was not sure if it would help us. It seems that people have mixed results but it doesn't hurt to try. I will use your advice and see what happens.

I still have doubts that Twitter will bring you a lot of links. I can see how you can get found out about and someone will add a link to your site but I think this would be just as effective as some of the other social bookmarking sites, article sites and press release sites. So it could help but I would not put all my eggs in that basket.

Even if Twitter links are "nofollow" you're still receiving targeted traffic (most of the time) as the people who follow you on Twitter will be either friends with you, or just share your interests.
And like Eric says, if they find it that helpful then there's a chance of getting a permalink linking back to your website that you're tweeting about.

I agree with the article: Twitter is not meant to drive huge traffic on your site, but it can be considered a very useful way to build trusted links and commercial/cultural relationships.
In other words, Microblogging is not iteself the proper way to create and share high quality contents, but it can be used to drive niche interests to your own valuable contents/services that users can find on your site.
Twitter and SEO
I see Twitter as another tool to drive traffic to the web site. Since links are no-followed my hope is that my target audience finds our site useful and that they return to it and pass it along to others in the field. Because of this traffic we continue to rank well in page rank and in search results for voice talent, voiceover talent and audio production.
The same for Facebook. We use it to drive potential or current customers to our site. I don't expect it to solve any seo issues, it's merely another tool in our seo arsenal.
