I was just forwarded to this article by a worried client! I then noticed the date and have yet to see any of this happening in 'the first quarter of 2009'.

Im a big fan of personalized search since it has come about as I find I get to things faster and generally find what topics Im searching on in a range of content formats. Video is a big one I enjoy.

I think Google may just go
I think Google may just go ahead with this. It actually sounds like a good idea to personalise what we search for.
Why should the same results come up when someone types the same keyword. SEO is more about the traffic it generates than the rankings themselves. Someone might have a 1st place ranking, but isn't getting any traffic from it. It makes the SEO look good, but it's a waste for the site owner. I think this is exciting.
I think SEO was starting to get boring anyway. This will definitely add a little hiccup, but what's life without a few challenges!

It remains to be seen
Well, history so far has shown that each improvement from the search engines eventually gets less effective. There is no doubt that personalization will make spamming results much harder but I’m sure it will lose some spam resistance over time.

It's a matter of change
All the changes Google does will certainly change SEO but not kill it at all. Anyway there will be sites that suit Google algorithm better and there will be techniques that allow you to make your site look better.
Of course those SEO who don't change will be killed by algorithm change...
Another reason why rankings cannot be used as a SEO metric
Personalised searched is a good reason why SERP's cannot be used as a good measure of the success of a SEO campaign. Not everyone sees the same ranking positions and therefore traffic rather than ranking positions should be used to measure the performance of a SEO campaign

Mentality of people always changes . And Google is always coming with new methods which analyzes web pages for seo and spam and rank according to them .
When people search, they do
When people search, they do no t want results that are "smart results" - they want reality. Search results that encompass all answers - not filtered results. Why do people always want to train us into a world that they feel is best for us? If we are searching, we want answers - not predictable answers based on something else we searched for. That means keeping track of everything we were searching for previously - an invasion of privacy, in my opinion.
