Agree with Milind Modyon the trend...
I've got to agree with Milind on this. We, at Trace Media, are having a fairly difficult time getting our clients listed first on the Local Search. We have been explaining to our clients just how important it is for their clients to give positive testimonials on many popular social sites. We've realized that Local Search rankings are becoming less about links and content and more about the validity of a good company and how they treat their clients. Now if we can just make our clients understand this.
Thanks for the great interview...much appreciated.
SEO Delivers Substantial Return on Investment
ROI is discussed a lot in business, especially when it comes to marketing your services or products as everyone wants to spend their money wisely to achieve a high Return On Investment. We like many other Pay Per Click companies have seem an influx in new clients looking to maximize there presence on the web. However I do think that the PPC and SEO industry have a "little" tuff times ahead as there will be clients cutting there marketing spend. Only time will tell as they say.

Yes I agree
Although, I don't believe we are going to have to wait at all. It's already happening. We develop Electronic Business Cards for companies and when we call them, there response is, "What you offer is a great product that would really help us; however, no one is buying anything right now."
Hmmm. We're there.

SEO is more cost-effective
Search engine optimization is much more cost effective than print media and broadcast media. Yellow pages is on its way out for good. From what we have seen, more and more business owners have seen the drop of their sales or leads from Yellow Pages ads. In constrast, those who have tried SEO or pay-per-click have seen the cost benefits of online marketing.
This recession has put huge pressure on business owners to spend their limited advertising dollars wisely. More and more are turning to search engines. We have seen a spike in the overall interest in SEO. Having said that, we have seen most business owners are very cautious about their moves. SEO is so new to the majority of businesses. So, they don't want to get into something without a proven record. This sometimes make it hard SEO companies.
The SEO overall trend is healthy. Plenty of websites out there that need to be optimized.
Link building
Very true indeed. Since link building is probably the hardest part of SEO, it makes sense that it is the most important one. And when google values links the most, this should of course be everyone's main focus. On the other hand, the links wont do much good unless you have some content to send those links too. I work with the rule of 90% link building and 10% content creating, and I think it is correct to spend this much time on getting those links.

Good info
Really Good information for SEO/SEM professionals
Cutting back by Real Estate and Financial Firms
You mentioned in your article that Real Estate and financial institutions have scaled down their on-line advertising. As individual real estate agents in Vancouver WA we can confirm we have not been using paid-advertising but rather, using SEO techniques and free advertising venues that have good traffic to stay in front of our prospects.
Online Advertising and Branding
We initially went online so we didn't have to print a 80 page catalog, the expense was killing us as we are constantly adding new products and handmade jewelry lines and revising items to make them sell faster. The website is so easy to keep up to date.
Our main source of targeted customers comes from Wholesale Jewelry and Gift Shows, but more and more we are getting inquiries from around the world because of our website. It takes a lot of time and SEO work to get the targeted traffic so don't waste your efforts on the wrong keywords and phrases. Do your homework and you'll get lasting results!
The effort you put into your website shows to your customers, and the search engines as well. Approach it like a "regular" business and you will do well.
A Question on PR
Great article. Speaking of link-building and SEO, would being on the first page of Google also mean you'll have a high PageRank?
Our site is new, any specific suggestions how to make it into a high PR page and SEO-friendly?
Online Marketing Stronger than Offline
For sure we are seeing that online marketing so far as the current recession has progressed is NOT suffering the same declines in revenues as offline (direct mail, TV, print, etc.).
No secret here; smart marketers know that online is easier to measure and more cost effective to both short term ROI and long term branding.
And, with Google cracking down on paid links, SEOs and in house SEO/SEM professionals must get smarter about growing the popularity and traffic to their client or employer's web properties. This has the effect of driving the charlatans out of the industry and when the economy recovers those marketers who have stuck with online strategies will benefit significantly since people also are becoming ever more responsive to buying products and services online as they realize savings!

As for my company thenakedhippie.com organic tshirts I've put all my efforts into online marketing and link building. I think people are getting tired of being bombarded with advertisements when they don't have a lot of money and they are starting to rely only on word of mouth or indirect referrals.

SEO is long term effect
I have seen and heard many people is always hoping for a quick SEO solution result. But sadly, it can't be true. When you are doing SEO, it will require a certain amount of time i.e. can be days, months or years before it gradually showing result. Of course if you have money to advertise offline and online then you may see a quicker result. But then it might simply fade away once you have stopped advertising.
Therefore, I always feel that it will be best if you can do it step by step and you will see result in a gradual manner. That way, I do believe you will have a sticky traffic that will stay. Good quality content updating regularly should be in hand. Try not to deceive search engines as you may pay for the penalty.
Doing the right thing for your site and it will definitely help in bad times like recession. As long as you have good flow of traffic and targetted visitors, you should be able to put through the crisis.

SEO recession proof?
To a certain extent I agree with this as what we're finding is businesses turning to SEO and search engine marketing in general as a smarter and cheaper way to generate sales. Certainly what seems to be happening is that many clients are increasingly apathetic about print and other media advertising and are much more excited about the propsect of 1st page on Google though I think this has been going on for ages and isnt just becasse of recent events.
Common Sense
I have to say that conentrating on local search seems like common sense, simply because for a vast majority of small businesses (which we specialize in) they are local businesses and depend on the local economy for their survival.
We have had great success working with small businesses on local search with phenomenal results for many who are selling services that are geographically restricted (catering, contracting, computer repair, the entire restaurant business, coffee shops, music venues, mechanics, etc).
He is not gonna admit
Of course Mody is not going to admit the fact that theres less work for SEOs... Our company for one has reduce online advertising and I'm sure most companies are also doing this.
I'd wait before 1 - 2 years, and if it fails why not use that site to build link to another project. If you have only one site for a company, it is still best to keep one since more and more companies are jumping into the bandwagon of online presence and you do not want to be left behind. Don't give up, continue improving your site, so many things you can do to improve it.
I would keep a website online for...
To answer your question about how long I would keep a website online that had no sales, I would need more info about your business model. Honestly I've kept websites up to one year that didn't bring in a dime, because I thought it was a good niche.
Some times your websites won't make money but if you put in time to create content, links I would use it for a quick link to get another project underway.
Website traffic
Could someone please give me ideas on how to get traffic to my website. I am stuck and really need someones help!!

nice Article

Nobody's Recession Proof
While I do agree that SEM is more recession-proof than less effective marketing channels, here's what scares me:
1. Search is primarly a reactive, not demand-driving medium. Run a big campaign on TV, radio, etc., and you'll get search queries. Kill the big campaign and the queries will fall off. If your strategy is to use your competitors' high-profile marketing spend against them by "flooding the bottom of the buy funnel," (a typical strategy in SEM), this method will be less effective.
2. You can't have the search engines sucking all profit out of e-commerce and expect these companies to go on forever. Google et al make a science of charging exactly what the market will bear. E-commerce vendors managing to a CPO will be less able to afford top position and scale if their orders drop, as is widely expected as consumer spending shrinks.
3. SEM functions are increasingly being brought in house. It's a stupid move from a performance perspective, but understandable given how crummy the reputation of the SEM industry is. This industry should have taken steps to weed out the charlatans and grifters five years ago, but because it hasn't, is highly vulnerable to the in-housing trend. As the job market gets worse, expect these in-house people to grow more vociferious in terms of dissing agencies as they fight desparately to hold on to their jobs.
4. Economic downturns are like wars, which have a life of their own and whose courses can't be predicted. While it's fine to claim that SEM will be immune, history is rife with once-healthy industries going under once the fire spreads too far.
A new way to market your products and brands in difficult times.
I think SEO is great and I agree that it is more recession proof. Any one who has every advertised in the yellow pages, newspapers, magazines or TV, knows how costly this can be.
In these difficult times, you need cost effective advertising and you need to offer your customers good deals. They are going through hard and difficult times too so give them an incentive to buy from you. This can be anything from a % off on purchase, a freebie with purchase, two for one, grand opening anything. Places that offer this will be the ones that get customers in hard times.
A long time ago an owner of a beauty college told me that he and his wife made it through the depression and recession by dropping there prices to rock bottom. This kept them in business and when things got better they raised there prices back up. You have to be willing to earn less money, make a smaller profit and do with less until things get better. People who are loosing there homes, jobs and businesses won't have a lot of extra income. The rest will be cautious and thrifty.
To back up what I say, I am offering a no charge ad inclusion staring about 9:00 AM Today (details are on the rent this space or advertise on the label page) with no purchase required for every ad placed on my bottled water. The only charge will be for the Talent and artwork. Orders will be optional and up to you but I will put it all together and make the bottled water available online, in my physical store and set up accounts locally in stores to start. Note: This is the town where Bill Gates lives so it's very techy here.
This is one step better then SEO only, but please make sure you did your SEO work because only the KEYWORD rather then the direct URL for your site will be on the label. (The reason for this is because sometimes people forget to renew there domain name or decide to sell it or quit. When that happens porn sites most often buy them and I can't take the risk because this will be public, however a link to your site will be on the talent's page online as it easier to take it down if that happens). Your ad goes from the customers eyes to your website and with all those hot models and talent on the label to help promote your business you know people will be saving these labels and trading with friends so you get FOCUSED LONG LASTING ATTENTION.
Thanks so much for letting me comment. I hope this okay and if you like my concept, please let me know.
I struggle...
I'm very familiar with target marketing and understand it. I've used and are using PPC marketing but I'm also aware of the click fraud invloved with it. I just have a small campaign going right now.
I struggle with SEO too because I've been taken advantage of by two different SEO firms over the last couple of years. For a web site that specializes in safety and security product, I don't feel very safe or secure.
As a result, I've turned to social marketing as alternative exposure for my site.
SEO in the customer's mind - overcoming resistance to SEO tactic
I would have to agree . Yet we face more than an uphill battle. Many business people are not familiar with the concepts of "target marketing" rather than broadcasting.
Along with that unfamiliarity and appreciation of the time frames involved.
Most are not willing to devote and invest the time with longer time span results needs. They can only see today and maybe tomorrow. Along with that they all come up with the bright idea that they should go after , and only go after the biggest market share right away - not realizing that it is an incremental and cumulative effort.
SEO people have not only search engine marketers but good salespeople as well able to prepare , present their case to resistant ears while realizing how to move the client along. Time marches on quicker than most people think
Done well SEO is a very good bargain - if the client can wait that long . or has the patience and knows anything but the magic phrase "Google"
advantages of seo
Everyone goes on about the advantages of seo marketing but as far as i am concerned it,s still not necesarily all there, lots of people from what i gather would give their right hand to be ranked 1or 2 on the first page of google,i m usually ranked 1or2 on the first page of google, yet i am stll not geting the type of trafic i would like, how about that?
