Do I smell desperation?
As a web site owner for safety and security products, I believe in finding out the truth, however, public figures deserve a certain level of privacy.
Deciding to run for public office shouldn't mean one loses all privacy. It's one thing to have information requested and quite another to have it stolen. Even the police have to gain information the proper way or it is immiscible in court and the criminal walks, even if the information shows them to be guilty.
I for one see these tactics as a sign of desperation.

It is ironic that many of the same people who think that public figures should have no privacy scream bloody murder when someone illegally hacks their own e-mail. These are also the same morons who somehow think their rights have been violated when the president takes action to try to protect Americans from terrorists on our soil, and are the first to blame him when an attack occurs.
There has never been one shred of evidence that Bush's program was anything other than what he said it is.
Go ahead, keep protecting the rights of terrorists. They sure do appreciate that you make it easy for them to plan ways to kill you.

The last 8 years we have seen unprecidented access into all of our daily lives by our republican, non conservative president. Palin talks of more transparency, ironicly, as she tries to hide using personal email accounts as a govenor. This is the same tactic Cheney and Rove used.
If protecting us from terror using premptive strikes as stated in the Bush Doctine, I believe it is in all of our best interest to examine the email of the people we elect and pay salaries to.

Buddy, the negativity is wrongly placed. It's not us versus them in partisan politics, it's us vs our ignorance. When we all reach the tipping point we will see the distraction game we've been programmed to follow. Rep, Dems, are the same bird, cutting the same deals in backrooms. Like Jesse Ventura sais, its like pro wressling, it's all for show.
They know if they polarize us on things that should be a non-issue then they can avoid actually talking about the deficit, the corporate welfare, the cronyism. And the big media plays along and its good for ratings. At this point our Nascar Nation of voters needs to wake up or we will soon get what we deserve, a fascist dictatorship.

It has NOTHING to do with party affiliation.
It has everything to do with freedom of press and transparency, and not obstructging news media access to one who might be pResident.
THe McCain campaign's tactics are NO DIFFERENT than the communist tactics who subvert the truth and freedom of the press.
We the PEOPLE are grteful for gaining access to her emails.
She is to be dispised- COVER UP and SCANDALS before getting to DC!

"Freedom of the Press" is not at issue here. This was not the action of a credentialed reporter seeking legitimate information for a legitimate story. This was a willful and wonton invasion of privacy. Political figure or not, the action was wrong and illegal. The intent was mischief and the sabotage. Whether you like it or not, the fact is this "kid" intended to create real harm and should face real and severe consequences.
Oh, and by the way, demanding that a public figure be "despised" is pretty strong stuff, isn't it? Why so much vitriol and hate (on any political side of the aisle) for an individual that has a different political stand than you? Ignorance, my friend, is a poor excuse for passing of judgement.

How would yo like to have your email hacked? It is an invasion of privacy and any hacker, private or government should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Rubico's identity
The AP can try to protect this criminal, but Google won't. Anybody can find his identity by googling "rubico and palin." Your post here provides some of the evidence against him--Rubico's choice of a password ("popcorn") fits well with the most likely suspect in this story, who happens to be the 20 year old son of a TN state senator.
