Modes
Interesting that she talks about modes, to me these refer to categorized themed areas of search as they relate to social media, metworking, video, media, organic and mobile search. Good to hear that Google is working to expand their limints in search of ways to help advertisers and publishers as well as the visitor.
Already happening
I totally think this is a possibility, and see that Google is already making substantial movements on many of these areas. Personalization, media are already becoming more and more synced together, and with Ads on Youtube now, you will see more and more of the 'modal' approach where various channels of online marketing will expand further at Google.
Universal Search
Have you heard of Google Audio Indexing (GAudi). How will this affect Universal Search? The spoken word of audio and video files can be indexed and searched like written words.
they didn't launch a satellite
re: "They also just launched a GeoEye satellite with the most..." No, GeoEye launched it with money from the National Geospatial Intelligence Ageny (NGA). Google licenses data from said satellite.
