Date vs. Data
I really like the date metaphor ("'Advertising is when you say you are good date. Public relations is when your mom says you are a good date. Engagement marketing is when your data says you are a good date.") But in the last sentence, should "data" actually be "date"? Seems like it would make more sense...
Storytelling truths
Jason, Thanks for this well written synopsis of some of the ideas that were shared this week at SES. I learned a great deal and enjoyed my time with Mike doing an interview for your channel.
You are absolutely right that getting to a real and authentic story is not as easy as I make it sound in my presentation, but I do this to help people understand they should be looking for those stories, and once they are found should share them across all the platforms they can. If a story of passion and purpose about your company is gathered its power is remarkable in delivering your benefits and values in a truly meaningful way. To me it seems like a no brainer that we should all be doing this. I was surprised walking around the exhibition hall and seeing very little video at all being used. This story is just beginning to be understood by corporations.
I spoke with a senior level representative of a multinational company at the Google Dance. He spoke of the pain they were experiencing trying to get their stories translated from one culture to another across their platforms. To me it seems like they should be gathering these stories in their native language and culture to be as authentic as possible. Any hint of un-real and the viewer/listener is out. People hear unauthentic immediately.
The truth about stories is that the people gathering these stories must be first curious, then a listener. The curiosity is to make sure you ask the right questions, the listener part comes when you hear something that brings up a new question that you hadn't thought of. It is in honest exchange that a story is revealed. Thanks so much for blogging about this important topic.
