Hardly, turns out to be more of a dud.

Now that knols have been around for some time we can see that they are really not that useful for SEO although could have some marketing or promotional value.

Hold On

So, are we suggesting that a Google query for something innocent (let's take scooters as an example) will display, on the first page:-

Google Adwords

Google Base (Froogle)

Google Knol articles

Google news

Google maps

You Tube (Google videos)

and then, maybe, if there's room, a link to a scooter site.

?????

Surely, that's going against everything that Google stands for (or am I naive?)

Google wants to popularize knoll more than wikipedia.

So they will add changes to their crawlers bots or whatever to give a high value to knoll pages on the serp's.
