Hi Mike, I am a Brit Expat living in Spain. Not only are the mobile costs high but it is sometimes nigh impossible to get a landline phone installed. Expats are forced to accept the sky high european mobile costs because they have no alternative apart from satelite phone systems with huge setup and operating costs plus unreliability problems. In my experience Telefonica want to do everything to protect their monopoly and their sky high profits as I believe they are one of the most profitable telephone companies in the world. I have had information from voip operaters who are wanting to promote in Spain but I dont think that they realise that to have a landline phone and ADSL is a luxury here.
