it is more important then people think
i think the problem we run into in the US with blogging and social networking, is that people dont see a real value in it yet. We are usually slower to catch on to innovation, Europeans, and asians are usually more hip to communication then we are over here. I have been telling my boss for months how we need to get into blogging and social networking. He keeps telling me it is a waste of time, until the other day. A friend of his came in who has a thriving internet company and he said he uses it all the time. Now he wants me to stop my web design and all my projects to work on blogging and he is even hiring interns to come in and help. All of that from one suggestion, now he sees the importance. he is a older fellow and was hesitant on changing, until he got the advice from a colleauge, now he is gungho for it. Now he sees there is value in it because it can get the word out for our business LifeSize Custom Cutouts. We have 10 sites and get 95% of our business from the internet.
Another reason why i think it is important is because today you can't really trust the media, because the news is telling us what they want and leaving out important information. So blogging is usually a unbias way to get the truth out there, it might not always be accuarate but you get a better understanding of something when you hear a ton of opinions on the subject, then you can make a informed decision for yourself. A statement i have been finding myself using alot is " If you dont trust the media, become the media."
Social sites!
I think the problem with the US is that they become very impatient about everything. They seem to jump around different social medias and try to promote that. Its a good idea to look at other site..but still have to stick to one for a complete result.
Resources?
Do you have some resources you would recommend for further research on exploring the possibilities of expanding in to this realm?
Thanks,
Larry

Good post Mike. Thanks for sharing the info.
Any idea what % of the Chinese population 43 million bloggers represents versus 26.4 million in the U.S.?
