So is 'grouping' an important step in social search optimising?

Niche groups within social networks seem to function well. For example youtube can be overwhelming till one can put together a playlist of ones' own. Next step is obviously to be able to share these videos with your friends or a group of people with similar interests. There is scope to improve upon group forum facilities in youtube, facebook and orkut.
