RE: White House Email Probe Wakeup Call To Businesses
How interesting. By default, I keep my mail as long as possible and back it up - I have email dating back to 2002. But I do this because I'm anal retentive, not because of any recordkeeping law. :)
Email is not a record
"many businesses falsely believe that email is not a business record."
Did the subject line catch your attention? well its true email is not a record. Email is a method of transporting information. The content of the email determines if it is a record or not.
If email is a record and all emails are retained like many in the IT world want, then that would be like retaining all your physical mail and then throwing it out after a given period of time.
Businesses need to have a records management program that will by working with IT determine how long to keep records.
