Penalties Overcome
Our site was linked to people who were linked to bad neighborhoods.
Our web site fell steadily off the first two pages.
Every crawl got worse and worse.'
Once I dropped these bad sites, Google placed us right back on first page in a few days.
Google Rocks, but ya gotta play by the rules!
Hit Recently
I've gotten hit recently on 3 of my sites that are more than 4 years old....initially it started out with ranking oscillations and then the sites completely dropped to out of the serps.
No linkbuilding (shady or otherwise), no hidden links, etc.
Thanks google
Backlash against Google
My reccomendation for everybody doing SEO is "ignore Google rules", they are lying.
This has been assumed more than a few times. I don't even care if Google is telling the truth. I'm sick of Google and their crap.
There are OTHER up and coming search engines and web crawlers if we could just ban together, Digg them, promote them, and use them. Google needs to remember who made them where they are today and that would be us... the SEO's, web developers, marketers.
Sandbox and Filters
Thanks for the tips which I am finding to be 100% accurate. On my tire chain website, I was getting lot of hits from RUD Tire Chains. I added a bunch of product names which included the word RUD. All of a sudden I was held back a couple pages from what was page 1 and RUD-this and RUD-that was all through the results text. I wanted to get rid of the penalty of over-redundant keywords, so I dropped all those RUD words. Now I am unintentionally cloaking and I am dropped from the results completely. Ouch!!!
Thanks again for the tips. I will try the webmaster tools to see if that will fix the problem.

Google is ridiculous ....
Good reading, thank you for the advises, but still upset with google.
I´ve tryed many things lately to have better rankings and could assume that google rules are fake. Of course they have hundred of automatic filters (maybe thousands!) affecting many web pages that are legally built.
My reccomendation for everybody doing SEO is "ignore Google rules", they are lying.
