What you've left out..

Is that fact that many facebook users find this extremely intrusive and are more likely to end up with terrible negative feelings towards these companies.

Just look at the tens of thousand of people who have joined the group protesting this very application. The backlash - is it really worth it?

But Beacon is causing problems...

Agree with your point about the nature of "hip-ness." You're absolutely right. But I'm expecting the Beacon backlash to grow. It's a bit problematic they way they have it now. Maybe they have to make it easier to opt out?
