search engine endorsement
With all the emphasis on search engine ranking, webmasters forget that top rankings are the equivalent of endorsements in the non-web world. Getting the number-one position on Google really means Google endorses that web site as its favorite as determined not by a single person, but by its algorithm. It's like Michael Jordan saying Wheaties is his FAVORITE cereal: he may like others but Wheaties is number one for him and that sells Wheaties. Well there are other ways to get endorsements that sell products. Being featured on Oprah or Consumer Reports or New York Times drives as much traffic to a web site as top rankings in searches. So looking at Google as the Oprah of the internet might put a different perspective of what SEO really is.
