We have used PR to bring attention to genuine events going on within our company, so only used them sparingly. It does certainly seem to be the case that some webmasters and SEOs do over do it and release plenty of non newsworthy PRs.

I have been reading up a lot recently on press release optimization for sending a release for my business and have read Lee's article as well. That's definitely a good one and I particulalrly like the links to the resources that he has provided. Absolutely

I've been experimenting with SEO press releases for several years and can attest to their incredible SEO benefit. What you say here: "The second step is getting that sucker out, not just to anywhere, but to the right places." is so critical. Some of the most established and respected Press Release distributors have little or no SEO value.

I spent an hour on the phone with a nice guy from PR Newswire - when I asked him if they offered anchor text, he said "what's anchor text?" While this company does have great connections with actual press, a press releases submitted here doesn't add much value in terms of SEO. On the other hand, I've found several PR distributors that are free, offer anchor text, and that rank well in the SERPs for keywords.
