How Web Design Can Affect Search Engine Rankings

Although old but not outdated

There are some universal truths in this post that will not or do not need to change. Search Engines are evolving but regardless rely on simple methods to give them and the customers they serve best results.

Search engines are not the be all and end all of traffic, so you can cater for search traffic and other ways i.e. social media for other traffic. The trick is to stay clean to serve both of these.

4 years later..

I'm glad people are still finding this info useful!

However, one important thing that's changed since I wrote this article four years ago is that search engines today are able to crawl most dynamic content. While excessive special characters should still be avoided in URL's (or modified using mod_rewrite) for user-friendliness, there is no danger to long URL syntax hindering your SEO. There are still, however, indexing problems as the result of dynamic content. For instance, if you're using AJAX functionality or Adobe SPRY framework, content generated by JavaScript will still not be seen by search engines. A little JavaScript and CSS together never hurt anyone (ok, maybe a little) but it's still possible to utilize JS in SEO-friendly ways.

Another recent development is that Flash content can now be indexed by Google and Yahoo. Textual content contained in SWF files is read by search engines. URL's contained in these files are even found too. The Adobe Searchable SWF Library has helped make this possible.

Just thought I'd stop in and update a couple points to an otherwise still-relevant article!

Cheers,
John Metzler
