Multiple Domains and 301 Redirects

Question on multiple domains

Hi, are you suggesting that it is better to use a 301 redirect than just having a site saying something like "This site is no longer used. Please go to this new URL?"

For example, let's say there is a typo name for a site and I own it. Would it be OK to use a 301 redirect to just automatically redirect it to my main site rather than saying "You got to the wrong site, click here to go to the correct one?"

Would I get penalized by search engines in either case? If so, for which one or is it both? What would be the best way to take care of it?

Also would there be any penalty if there was 10 domains doing a 301 redirect to a page? This could be legitimate if these were typos that I wanted to go to my site.

Thanks for your help.
