The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from when the cartoon first debuted a few decades ago have grown up a bit now that they are starring in a movie. Fans were able to sneak a peek of their new images this week when pictures were leaked online. However, as quickly as they popped up, the photos disappeared.

Director Michael Bay has worked hard to keep the fierce reptiles’ appearances a secret. He did allow pictures of the turtles in motion action suits to be released, but the actual on-screen look has been hidden until the breach.

Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo have updated their looks a bit from the cartoon, which debuted in 1987 and was based on a black-and-white comic book series that was published in 1984. Originally, the ninja superstars were to simply have red masks and belts, and were to be distinguished only by their different weapons.

When the turtles hit the small screen, they each rocked specific colors and monogrammed belts so that young viewers could tell them apart: Leonardo wore blue, Michelangelo favored orange, Donatello looked ravishing in purple and Raphael donned red.

See more about the movie, here:

From the leaked photos, viewers were able to see that Donatello’s look incorporates ancient and modern features. Along with gadgets, Donnie also sported visual elements from ancient Japanese warriors. The gadgets make sense, however, as this turtle isn’t no dummy; he is the most technological of the group.

Raphael was spotted wearing fabric around his arms and legs, as well as a loin cloth. Michelangelo was a bit more modern with sunglasses, a necklace, shorts and a jacket wrapped around his waist.

Twitter is pretty excited about the turtle buzz:

The heroes in a half-shell fight evil and do good for mankind when the movie premieres on August 8, 2014.
