  • Nina Dobrev is a lady of many layers. Far beyond her role in The Vampire Diaries and her involvement with former love interest Ian Somerhalder, this young woman has her multifaceted act together. Her latest act, in fact, finds her starring in a film–Let’s Be Cops–and it’s her first foray into comedy. To up the ante on the totally unexpected level, her date for the film’s premiere was BFF and soon-to-be Dancing With the Stars judge, Julianne Hough.

“I like to get my friends together and make it a day of getting ready for a big event, because I’m not here very often–Vampire Diaries shoots in Atlanta,” she says. “We’ll hang out, get ready, get in the car and go. We’ll make it a chill, relaxed, fun environment.”

In Let’s Be Cops, Nina Dobrev plays the role of a waitress named Josie. Josie befriends two customers–Jake Johnson and Daymon Wayans, Jr. The two attend a party dressed as cops, and are so convincing they set about impersonating officers of the law.

“I’ve always loved the genre, but I’ve never done comedy,” the 25-year-old says. “It was good for me to start with this one, because I didn’t have the pressure of carrying all the comedy on my shoulders — the boys have the jokes, for the most part.”

Nina Dobrev finds her life in the limelight replete with rumors about her love life–especially since her split from Ian Somerhalder. In fact, she admits that Twitter is often abuzz about whomever she is dating on a frequent basis–except she usually isn’t dating anyone.

“I laugh stuff off all the time,” she says of online rumors. “If you read half the s–t people wrote about me, you’d be in hysterical laughter, too. It’s not always bad things — people are generally pretty positive, and I haven’t had any scandals, which is why I can laugh about it — but still, anytime you read anything that’s not true or well sensationalized, it’s like, ‘Well, there we go.’ So many people are speculating, and even some of my own friends are fooled by it, so what will the rest of the world think?”

Dobrev got the last laugh when rumors arose at Comic-Con, tweeting out a photo of herself with lots of supposed love interests.

Sources say Nina Dobrev likely brought Julianne Hough to her Let’s Be Cops premiere so further rumors about her love life wouldn’t erupt, and attention could be paid to her role in the film.

With that kind of attention paid to her every move, it’s no wonder Nina Dobrev embarked on a most unusual, but very brave excursion this past spring while Vampire Diaries was on hiatus. She took off for Europe and spent a month and a half traveling solo–no entourage, no Hollywood friends–just Nina.

“I used to pride myself on being totally independent,” she explains. “Everything I’ve done until now is because I worked my ass off. I never needed anyone — I just made it happen. Nowadays, I’m never by myself, whether I’m with 150 crew members on set, on a plane or at an event. I haven’t had any alone time for a while, and I wanted to get away and feel that way again.”

After making new friends and traveling with some of them, her trip afforded her numerous adventures, including wake-boarding by day and snowboarding by night in Switzerland, surfing with “the No. 1 local Balinese surfer, a 15-year-old kid,” and witnessing “one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.”

That said, when watching Nina Dobrev on the big screen in Let’s Be Cops or on TV in Vampire Diaries, make sure you mentally peel back some of the layers of this fascinating young woman. There are way more there than her pretty face belies. She’s got guts and a sense of adventure in addition to her talent and her beauty.

And don’t ever tease her about her love life. She will get the last laugh every time–maybe even at your expense.
