The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the sequel to the smash indie hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding is getting its long overdue sequel.

The small budget film was a giant success at the box office in 2002, raking in $241 million domestically. Nia Vardalos has already written the script and plans to reprise her role as Toula Portokalos, a first generation Greek-American with an eccentric family. Her love interest in the film Ian Miller, played by John Corbett (Sex in the City), will also appear in the sequel.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding started as a one-woman play performed by Vardalos. The semi-autobiographical plot centered around what it was like to be raised in an ultra-Greek, overbearing family and the complications that arise with wanting to marry a man who is not Greek. Lucky for Vardalos, Rita Wilson (who is half-Greek) saw the play in Los Angeles and ultimately teamed up with husband Tom Hanks to bring the stage adaptation to the big screen.

The production team is back for the sequel as well. Vardalos will produce the film alongside Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman. A director has yet to be named.

The sequel’s plot will reportedly involve the revelation of a family secret and another wedding. Vardalos received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay in 2002. She spoke about the reasons for wanting to do a sequel, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

Vardalos dipped her foot into television waters in 2003 by adapting My Big Fat Greek Wedding into a sitcom called My Big Fat Greek Life. However, the show lasted only seven episodes before being cancelled.
