News Corp Considering Yahoo Deal
Rupert Murdoch may end up part of Steve Ballmer’s bid to bring Yahoo into the Microsoft fold, depending on how the deal progresses.
With Yahoo ready to talk about its first quarter financial numbers for fiscal 2008, some other big money rumbling could be heard from News Corp magnate Murdoch’s office. The idea of Fox Interactive Media, MSN/Live, and Yahoo under one big umbrella could still happen.
Though he isn’t going to try and outbid Microsoft to gain Yahoo, Murdoch said in Reuters a possibility remains for News Corp to be part of the fun:
In response to a reporter’s question about his interest in pursuing a bid with Microsoft for Yahoo, he said “Depends on the deal.”
“Is Google really going to get control of the advertising world, and should Microsoft be supported in their attempt to try and stop that?” he asked.
Yahoo turned to Google recently to run a limited test of AdSense for Search in Yahoo’s search results. Public comments a week after the test made all the right positive noises, but the real test comes this afternoon when the markets close and Jerry Yang talks about Yahoo’s finances.
We expect a flurry of activity over the next 48 hours regarding Yahoo and Microsoft. Disappointing numbers from Yahoo will put pressure on Yang to get a deal done with Microsoft, while a strong showing could prompt Microsoft to raise its bid for the portal company.
