US Weekly obtained an official statement from Sean’s rep about their separation. “After careful thought and much consideration, Sean has made the difficult decision to call the wedding off…The recent rumors and accusations reported by so-called or fake sources are simply untrue. Sean wishes Naya nothing but the best and it is still his hope that they can continue to work through their issues privately. We will not be commenting again on this matter."
The rumors Sean’s rep alludes to is the Star magazine accusations that the rapper cheated on Rivera. TMZ reports that the real reason behind their breakup revolves around Rivera’s jealousy and control issues. The gossip site claims that Sean thought Rivera was “too controlling and too jealous of the women he worked with and met on tour.”
The couple’s courtship began on Twitter. She told Access Hollywood that “I had followed him, and he sent me a little message like ‘I’m a fan.’ We went to dinner and the rest is history.” Eventually, the couple became official to the public, and got engaged in October after dating for six months.
The pair seemed happy as recent as last month when Rivera told PEOPLE that she was “very deep” in planning her wedding to Sean.
On Tuesday, the actress was photographed without her engagement ring at the Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces event. However, last Friday, she tweeted to Cosmopolitan magazine thanking them for including her and Big Sean in their 19 cutest engaged celebrity couples piece.

Rivera often gushed about the couple’s relationship. She was “just so in love” with Big Sean. In December, when a PEOPLE reporter asked Rivera about family plans she responded, "We'll see. Whatever happens will happen. Right now we're just so in love and really looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.”
The couple’s separation comes a year after they started dating and six month after their engagement.
