GiiNii introduced a pretty cool mobile device at the Consumer Electronics Show called the Movit Mini. It looks like a great way to access the mobile Internet and social networks as well as any number of applications one decides to put on it.

Movit Mini

It’s based on the Google Android mobile OS, and it’s completely open to developers to create all kinds of applications. It’s not a phone exactly, but it is Skype-enabled, and that means you can talk on it for free via the Internet. That means no cell phone contracts. That alone should be enticing to many people. It’s ready to use anywhere in the world through a Wi-Fi network.

"Our new Movit Mini lets users sever the tether to mobile phone carriers," says GiiNii President Scott Reeves. “Consumers only need to be in a Wi-Fi hotspot to enjoy the savings of making all of their calls on Skype. Since the unit is Wi-Fi capable, users can keep up with their social networking sites, surf the Internet, send and receive e-mail and instant messages, receive RSS feeds, get weather updates, play games and more.”

Mike McDonald caught up with GiiNii’s Chief Marketing Officer Dennis Sones at CES and talked with him a bit about the device:

Sones demonstrated how you can watch nice full screen videos on the device, which also services as a music player. He also noted that it has a battery life of 6-8 hours, and how you can add additional memory. Other features of the Movit Mini include:

– 480 x 272 resolution
– 256 MB of storage
– Bluetooth 2.0
– Built-in microphone/speaker
– Stereo headset jack
– Mini USB 2.0 port
– Camera
– Calculator
– Address book
– Alarm

The device is being targeted toward younger users, and it’s not hard to see why that demographic would be interested. They have not revealed a retail price yet, but it has been guesstimated at around $150. Not bad for no cell contracts. Giini is currently taking orders for the Movit Mini, which is expected to ship in the middle of the year.

it looks like a cool phone but its only got 256mb of memory, looks bulky, and has the Google Android mobile OS. I don’t see this going anywhere. I mean how is this different than the Google Phone in its functionality. I think people have become accustomed to contracts and to break a contract is about the same as the cost of this phone.. I would rather have an iphone than get the benefit of no contracts..

It’s just not different enough and does not offer enough new functionality to outweigh getting an iphone or blackberry with a contract.

Well, the thing is, this isn’t a phone at all really. Sure it’s capable of VOIP calls via WiFi, but that is not it’s primary function. As a mobile platform device though, I have to say that’s a pretty nice add-on type feature.

Now that the trend is to build an all-in-one device, it’s pretty strange to see that they decided to build a social media thing that’s not a phone… i’m sure they can build all those apps for an iPhone …. or any other smart phone. Now the customers will decide, let’s wait and see how they react…

They’re really playing up the angle of using skype and making free calls.
