Starting last year, Google News slowly tested and introduced video clips.  Fresh stats indicate that it has a ways to go, but news-related videos remain something that many companies will pursue.

CNN is the big winner in this category, according to DoubleClick Performics, with about 57 percent of the participants in a 500-person group using it to look at news videos.  Google News trailed far behind with 18 percent, and Google.com, with 53 percent, was actually the runner-up.

A similar imbalance was evident between Yahoo and Yahoo Video, while MSN.com and FOXnews.com are simply behind the leaders, according to Eric Papczun, the director of natural search optimization for DoubleClick Performics.

The profitability of news videos will have a lot to do with how much corporate attention they receive, but in what’s far from a zero-sum game, it seems that there’s a lot of room for improvement.  Indeed, since relatively little attention has been paid to online news videos (even CNN has only a few small boxes on its homepage), almost any company could grab the lead.

Look for competition to intensify here as interest in universal search increases.
